Roland Emmerich Doubles Down, Says Stonewall Was “A White Event, Let’s Be Honest”

Roland Emmerich appears to have taken all the criticism about his misguided flop Stonewall in stride — either that, or he simply loves a good tongue-lashing. (And that’s definitely a thing.)

How else to explain why, in a new interview with The Guardian to promote Independence Day: Resurgence, Emmerich says, “Stonewall was a white event, let’s be honest.”

Openly taking on accusations that he was “whitewashing” the entire gay rights movement (a petition with over 25,000 signatures claimed, “It is time that black and brown transwomyn and drag queens are recognized for their efforts in the riots”), Emmerich says:

My movie was exactly what they said it wasn’t. It was politically correct. It had black, transgender people in there. We just got killed by one voice on the internet who saw a trailer and said, this is whitewashing Stonewall. Stonewall was a white event, let’s be honest. But nobody wanted to hear that any more.”

The statement hasn’t gone unnoticed, either:

Breaking: idiotic white man whitewashes history for failed film and continues to be smugly ahistorical. More: t.co/bgT3vXTTW7

sunday-mass-kiss-pride

Love is in the air at Sunday Mass.

It’s that time of the year again. Rainbow flags are a’flappin’ down Market Street, more glitter than usual seems to be blowing in the breeze, and you’ve likely just realized you still haven’t finalized your weekend plans. It’s Pride week in San Francisco!

Head over to the GayCities San Francisco Pride Guide to peruse the dizzying array of Pride happenings to your heart’s content.

To make things even easier on you, we put together our top five Queerty picks for the weekend. These are all exceptional stand-out parties that are guaranteed to tickle your fancy, assuming you’re a generally chill person who likes to have fun. Hopefully that’s not too great a leap.

Drumroll please…

1. Best overall pick: Sunday Mass at The Chapel — Sunday, June 26; 8 p.m. – 3 a.m.

sunday-mass-2

We’re going to begin at the end, and only because if you’re only going to one party this Pride, you can’t do better than Sunday Mass. This is the third year the gang is getting together for a pride-stravaganza, and it will be one well-oiled machine of seductive debauchery. They’ve got hedonism down to a science for their most ambitious undertaking yet, as over 40 artists and musicians pitch in to create that magical Pride experience every gayby dreams of. Each room at The Chapel is being transformed into its own interactive art wonderland, the result being a web of pure joy sprinkled with three dance floors, an epic cuddle puddle, body & face painting, tarot reading and virtual reality. Did we mention virtual reality?! While the crowd will skew male, Mass is an inclusive event (as are all the events we’ll feature), so it’s a surefire hit for your whole crew. Save some strength throughout the weekend, you’ll need it. Ticket info here.

2. Best party to avoid a hangover: Pride Nightlife at California Academy of Science — Thursday, June 23; 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.

1_1200x900_trex

So you want to dip your toes in the Pride party punch, but you’re not the type to rage into the night. It’s cool baby, don’t fret. Pride night at the California Academy of Science has your back. Hosted by Juanita More and House of Babes, this Thursday Pride kickoff is the perfect way to see, be seen and make a scene all before the clock strikes midnight and your Uber Black turns into a 1978 Mercury Zephyr. This year there’s a drag tribute to Prince and Bowie, a bit of vogue flavor with the always-on-point Jocquese Whitfield, and of course all the amazing attractions of the museum to keep you awestruck all night. Plus you can still make it home in time to catch up on Orange Is the New Black, and that’s something to be proud of.

3. Best party for babes: House of Babes Big Queer Pride Party at Public Works — Saturday, June 25;  7 p.m. – 3 a.m.

house-of-babes

But seriously, the babes will be out in full force. Who classifies as a “babe?” Anyone and everyone in this gorgeous queer family of ours who believes in themself and wants to spread the love. While all the parties we’re suggesting are inclusive, at this QPOC event you’ll see a truly beautiful mix across gender, sexuality, body type and style. This party is for everyone except haters, and that can mean so many different things. Hip hop, twerk and club beats will keep the crowd going strong, and some very special live performances from NoLa sissy bounce babe Katey Red and NYC-based rapper babe Dai Burger are sure to blow the lid off the place.

4. Best pick for the ones who want it all: Hard French at Mezanine — Sunday, June 26; 3 p.m. – 11 p.m.

hard-french-pride

Perhaps you’ve been to one of the monthly Hard French parties in the Mission? Well this is that, plus so, so, so much more. It’s really two (three?) events in one — an outdoor street party with a similar ’60s soul vibe as the ever-popular monthly iteration (helloo sunshine!), as well as a full indoor club experience featuring some of the best DJ talent from Los Angeles and around The Bay. As if that weren’t enough, these guys went and fully outdid themselves by booking Psychic TV to perform a live set. Yes, that Psychic TV — the influential trans-fronted ’80s/’90s industrial psychedelic rock group famous in part for their intense shows. It’s going to get weird it all the right ways.

5. Best place to dance on a budget: Civic Center — Saturday & Sunday; Noon – 6 p.m.

san-francisco-pride-670x418

The great thing about San Francisco Pride is that unlike many cities, event tickets remain relatively inexpensive. That being said, for anyone who is hard on funds this Pride, don’t think for a second that your dancing ambitions are squashed. Don’t forget that the Civic Center Pride Festival is FREE, as in F-R-E-E, both Saturday and Sunday. There will be multiple dance stages, many incredible performances and people-watching up the wazoo. Help keep it cute! Remember to hydrate, and be aware that security this year will be amped up, so expect to have your bag searched when you enter the event. Other than that, go crazy and have the time of your life.

Tim Tebow Pays Hospital Visit to Former Teammate Injured in Pulse Orlando Shooting

Said Sumter in an Instagram post: “My high school quarterback left the Bahamas to come and see me. Tebow has always been an awesome person.”

The Orlando Sentinel reports:

After Tebow and Sumter competed together at Nease High, Tebow won two national titles and the Heisman Trophy while leading the Florida Gators. Sumter played at Jacksonville  University before eventually moving to Orlando to work as a dancer and bartender.

In addition to meeting with Tebow, Sumter posted a picture of his visit with Orlando City captain Kaká, former MLB star Johnny Damon and Gov. Rick Scott while holding an #OrlandoUnited shirt being sold by local pro sports teams to raise funds for those impacted by the shooting.

New Documentary ‘The Freedom to Marry’ Shows How Marriage Equality Was Won

New Documentary ‘The Freedom to Marry’ Shows How Marriage Equality Was Won

freedom

It’s a beautiful thing when an advocacy group has to close its doors because it has achieved its goal. And it’s not at all common. Evan Wolfson is one of the few lucky people who can tell us what that feels like.

Wolfson was the founder and president of the now-defunct Freedom to Marry organization whose goal was to legalize same-sex marriage. After a hard-fought 32-year battle, his mission was accomplished: “The campaign I lead — led! — has now succeeded and will close its doors,” Wolfson wrote in the New York Times, on the day of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that made same-sex marriages a reality,

evan

The mastermind of marriage equality dedicated his entire career to the cause. In 1983, when he was on his third year at Harvard Law School he wrote a paper entitled ‘Same Sex Marriage and Morality: The Human Rights Vision of the Constitution’ explaining how the LGBT community could achieve marriage equality. He only got a B then, but in three decades, he’d change the world as we know it.

Now, as the country gets ready to celebrate the first anniversary of the biggest gay rights ruling ever in American history, you can see how the unbelievable journey went down with the world premiere of ‘The Freedom to Marry’ at the Frameline Film Festival on June 25.

Directed by Wolfson’s childhood friend filmmaker Eddie Rosenstein, the film is a War Room-style feature documentary about the same-sex marriage movement, from the final frenetic months of the legal and grassroots campaign. It also profiles Civil Rights Attorney Mary Bonauto, who had never argued in the Supreme Court before.

victory

In the words of Evan Wolfson, via joemygod:

“The Freedom to Marry” film captures the behind-the-scenes story of how our movement – from same-sex couples in Kentucky to loving parents in Texas to funders and organizations from California to Maine who dug down and did the work – transformed a “preposterous notion” into one of the most successful civil rights campaigns in history.

In “The Freedom to Marry”, you’ll hear firsthand from April DeBoer & Jayne Rowse – two of the courageous plaintiffs who took the fight for the dignity of their family and children all the way to the Supreme Court. You’ll have a front-row seat as our movement’s litigators, including the indomitable Mary Bonauto, prepare to stand before the nine justices of the Supreme Court to make the case for marriage. And you’ll see my cherished Freedom to Marry team criss-crossing the country, working with organizations and allies to rack up the building-block wins and create the climate that allowed for victory.

Check out the trailer below:

The world premiere of ‘The Freedom to Marry’ is on June 25 at 1:15pm at the San Francisco’s Castro Theatre. Director Eddie Rosenstein, Producer Jenni Olson, and Mr. Marriage himself, Evan Wolfson are expected to attend. You can get your tickets here.

Happy 1-year anniversary, America!

And thank you, Evan, from the bottom of our hearts.

Pulse Orlando Bouncer, Hero, to Serve as Grand Marshal at Houston Pride

Pulse Orlando Bouncer, Hero, to Serve as Grand Marshal at Houston Pride

Imran Yousuf, the bouncer from Pulse Orlando who is credited with saving countless lives during last week’s terror attack, will serve as honorary grand marshal of Houston’s LGBT Pride parade on Saturday.

The 24-year-old Yousuf, who’s Hindu and served with the Marines in Afghanistan, reportedly risked getting shot to open a back door at Pulse in the midst of the shooting, allowing 60 or 70 people to escape.

Yousuf will appear in the Houston parade alongside a 20-foot-by-30-foot LGBT Pride flag bearing the names of the 49 people killed in the attack. Attendees will also have a chance to sign the flag and meet Yousuf.

“The flag will be delivered to the Orlando Pride Parade,” Pride Houston announced on its website. “It will signify that the Houston LGBT Community and our Allies stand together, and stand strong. We stand against hate and stand for love. We stand with Orlando. #WeAreOrlando.”

CBS News reported last week that Yousuf was making his last rounds when the first shots rang out.

“Three of four shots go off and you could tell it was a high caliber,” he said. “Everyone froze. I’m here in the back and I saw people start pouring into the back hallway, and they just sardine pack everyone. … And I’m screaming ‘Open the door! Open the door!’ And no one is moving because they are scared. There was only one choice. Either we all stay there and we all die, or I could take the chance, and I jumped over to open that latch a we got everyone that we can out of there.”
