What It’s Like To Be Gay And Asexual In A Sex-Crazed World?

What It’s Like To Be Gay And Asexual In A Sex-Crazed World?

josh-coty-1

For 25-year-old Josh Coty, being part of the one percent is not all it’s cracked up to be. At least, when it comes to being part of that one percent… You know, the percentage of the population that identifies as asexual, or “someone who does not experience sexual attraction,” as defined by the Asexual Visibility and Education Network.

Related: Exactly What Percentage Of The World’s Population Is Asexual?

For Josh, who identifies as “gay and asexual,” life can be a bit complicated. When he’s not creating comedy YouTube videos or cuddling with his cat, the Buffalo, NY-based resident can be found going on (sometimes bad) dates, working in the beauty industry and figuring out how to navigate as asexual in an often sex-crazed world.

We recently interviewed Josh about his life, dating and what he has to say to all those people who question asexuality…

QUEERTY: You identify as gay and asexual. What does that mean exactly?

COTY: I suppose people would say I am “asexual homoromantic” but I don’t necessarily feel like that label fits me. I’m gay–I like guys, just like anybody else who is gay, but not necessarily in a sexual way. I have an aesthetic attraction (who doesn’t like a nice butt?), sensual attraction, and a romantic attraction to men. If I have a strong emotional bond I may form a form of sexual attraction as well.  Asexuality exists on a spectrum.

How do people usually react when you tell them you’re gay and asexual?

People tell me that I don’t know what I’m talking about, that it’s impossible, or they don’t know what asexuality is, and all they can remember is [learning about asexuality] in middle school science class. I feel like the latter believe I’m some sort of plant, and that I can reproduce asexually. Which honestly, would be really cool, but it’s not the case. Or I’m told that I’m lying. I actually get that a lot.

How has your asexuality affected your relationships?

It definitely impacts them quite a bit. I do have sexual relationships with my partners because I want to make them happy, it’s just not enjoyable to me and I’d honestly rather be eating a cheeseburger. I always give my partners a full disclosure about my sexuality before I start dating [them], but I don’t think the majority of people understand what it means. In the beginning, it is a lot easier to have a sexual relationship with my partners, or when things are going well, but when the emotional connection fades, it really impacts my willingness to do anything sexual.

josh-coty-2A lot of people view sex as a way of being intimate or feeling close to the person they love. How do you achieve intimacy with a partner if not through sex?

Physical touch is a big thing for me. Like, I do have a sensual attraction because I’m not some kind of unfeeling monster. I like kissing, cuddling, holding hands, et cetera and just generally being close with someone both physically and emotionally. It’s just not sexual for me; it’s more sensual than anything. Some people define intimacy as something purely physical, but it goes deeper than that for me.

Do you ever feel pressure to be sexual?

Every day! If you’ve ever gone on a date with a gay male, you most likely know that they’re craving one thing and it’s definitely not on my menu (all out of sausage guys, sorry). It’s frustrating to feel like in order to even get a date, I have to pretend that I’m someone I’m not, or play down my asexuality. You tell a gay guy you’re not really into sex and he looks at you like you just said Beyoncé was an untalented hack.

Have you had any particularly good or bad experiences when it came to living your identity?

I did have one guy I dated and when I told him about it he just said “Hey, that’s cool man! I totally respect that.” and it was never an issue. He would always ask for consent before doing anything sexual, and in general it was just very refreshing. On the other end of things, I’ve had exes tell me that I’m lying about my asexuality because I’ve had sex before. Even after explaining that it’s not a medical condition (all my organs work perfectly, thank you) and it’s just my sexuality, they still don’t get it. You could have sex with a woman if you wanted to, but you don’t because you don’t enjoy it, just like I don’t have sex in general because I don’t enjoy it.

What is the biggest misconception about people who are asexual?

The biggest misconception about people who are asexual is that it’s a choice or that it is an excuse. I’ve been told that people who are asexual are just ugly or they aren’t able to “get any” and that’s not the case. I’ve been told I’m broken or have a medical condition. I’ve had my hormones checked, my thyroid checked, and I’ve even seen a urologist and everything is perfectly normal. I’ve gotten a lot of backlash from the LGBTQ community saying that I don’t belong and shouldn’t identify with it, which is absurd for a multitude of reasons.

josh-coty-3Were those medical tests a result of people saying you were broken or had a medical condition?

Yeah, it definitely was. Especially because I wanted to be normal and have a healthy relationship, I wanted to fix whatever was “wrong” with me. I hate doctors with a passion and don’t even like to talk to them about mundane issues let alone sexual ones. It took me awhile to find the right doctor. After everything had been said and done, it was a relief but also a disappointment. I accept myself and embrace myself for who I am, but still wish to be “normal” sometimes. I’m an absolute control freak so not being able to fix a “problem” was something I had to come to accept about myself.

Some people in the LGBTQ community say that asexual people are simply “afraid of sex” or “just haven’t had great sex yet.” How would you respond to people who say that?

I find it extremely sad that the people in the LGBTQ community say things like that because it’s the exact same thing they hear from people that oppose their own sexuality. “You just haven’t met the right guy yet, you’re not really a lesbian,” “Being gay is a choice,” or “It’s a mental condition.” What is the difference between that and saying, “Being asexual is a choice you’ve made,” “Your hormones must be off or something happened to you when you were a kid,” and “You haven’t found the right sexual partner yet?” Absolutely nothing. People who behave that way are imposing the exact kind of negative and close-minded behavior they face and vehemently oppose onto another group, simply because they don’t understand. It’s a hard concept for a lot of people to understand because they experience sexual attraction everyday, and they can’t imagine not feeling it, or not feeling it as often as the average person.

You’ll probably be shocked at what happened when Governor Bryant went to the bakery to place an order for an extremely anti-gay cake. But even more shocking is what the governor requested as the cake’s decoration.

Former Strategist and Extremist Ally Roger Stone Clears Up Those Pesky Donald Trump Gay Rumors

Former Strategist and Extremist Ally Roger Stone Clears Up Those Pesky Donald Trump Gay Rumors

Roger Stone Alex Jones Trump gay

Roger Stone, the former chief political advisor, longtime friend and conservative extremist ally of Donald Trump who heads a Trump SuperPAC, appeared in an on-the-street gab with fellow right-wing extremist conspiracy theorist, 9/11 truther, and InfoWars radio host Alex Jones.

Stone claims that a forthcoming “hit piece” from the Washington Post plans to smear Trump with gay rumors and allegations he used cocaine.

Says Stone in the interview: “I was personally approached by the Washington Post, they asked me to speak to a reporter on a background basis about what I might know about Trump….Did I ever attend parties where Donald Trump used cocaine? Folks, Donald Trump has never used drugs in his life. The man doesn’t even take aspirin….Did he have girlfriends on the side, today or previously? The answer is no. Yes, during the time he was unmarried, he was a ladies man. He did date many beautiful models, but the answer is no….

Added Stone: “Lastly, she wanted to know what about the reports that Donald Trump is gay. Folks, there is no report Donald Trump is gay. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but he is a red-blooded American male and he is most definitely heterosexual.”

Watch:

Media Matters  wrote a recent reminder about Stone’s background:

Stone is not a typical political adviser, and when the press treats him as one they miss out on a key election story: the extremism of Trump’s supporters. Stone’s decades-long history of dirty tricks includes playing a role in Watergate that later caused him to be fired from a job in the Senate. He has a record of racist andmisogynistic rhetoric that caused MSNBC and CNN to ban him from their networks. Stone also regularly callsfor public figures to be executed.

Stone’s history of extremism is particularly relevant for readers when he is quoted discussing the Clintons. Stone has alleged that the Clintons are “plausibly responsible” for the deaths of roughly 40 people, including John F. Kennedy Jr. He has also claimed that Bill Clinton is not Chelsea Clinton’s real father. In 2008, he ran ananti-Hillary Clinton group that went by the acronym “C.U.N.T.”

Male thongs. They may be hot in theory, but rarely do they work out in real life. Few men can actually pull them off, and those who try often struggle. (The notable exception being, of course, Zac Efron. Or French guys.)

Call us cray cray, but there’s just something about a string running up a guy’s butt that’s, well, a little unsexy.

As swimsuit season goes into full swing, it’s high time to remind everyone that g-strings aren’t always good look. Sorry, but they’re not. Board shorts. Sure! Swim trunks. Great! Speedos. OK! But thongs? Just say NO!

Scroll down for pictures of men in thongs, and remember these epic fails the next time you shop for swimwear…

9 Film Franchises That Need Gay Characters Now

9 Film Franchises That Need Gay Characters Now

9Film_Franchise_Main
From flamboyant pirates and super spies to mutants and men in capes, Hollywood’s biggest action, fantasy and sci-fi properties have assembled an army of iconic heterosexual heroes over the years.

Thankfully, shows like Torchwood, Arrow, and The Flash have helped level the playing field by bringing queer characters to our favorite fantasy lands on TV. But big-screen adventures in our beloved geeky genres continue to be a virtual wasteland when it comes to LGBTQ inclusion.

The rise of recent hashtags such as #GiveElsaAGirlfriend and #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend highlight the growing number of fanboys and girls who want to see same-sex romance in a big-budget franchise.

As the summer blockbuster season arrives, we ask: Which movie studio will be the first to boldly go where no one has gone before?

Here are 9 Hollywood film franchises that are overdue for a non-hetero hero to join their ranks.

1. The Fast and the Furious
fast_and_furious_franchisejpg

It’s hard to believe with all that testosterone spread out across seven movies we haven’t seen one guy join the crew who likes to drive a stick in the bedroom. With the franchise moving in a new direction after the unfortunate death of Paul Walker, this would be the perfect time to introduce a new guy or girl who moves in the same-sex fast lane.

2. Star Wars
StarWars_Franchise
While a small number of LGBT characters have appeared in Star Wars novels, we have yet to see one on the big screen.  The creative minds behind our favorite film franchise from far, far away, would be wise to take note of the love affair the internet has had with a possible Finn and Poe romance after the two made their debut – and shared clothes – in Episode VII. The fans have already spoken, and it’s obvious The Force is strong with this one.

3. Star Trek
Trek_Franchise
The racial and gender diversity displayed in the Star Trek universe are just two of the many reasons this franchise has been a favorite of people from every corner of the globe since it debuted in 1966. As Star Trek celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, the introduction of new LGBT characters in the films and upcoming TV series would be the perfect way to move the needle forward for progress and honor the inclusive vision Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry had for these voyages in the final frontier.

4. James Bond

Daniel Craig as James Bond, wearing an Omega 2201.50 Seamaster Planet Ocean watch, similar to the model featured in the Eon Productions 007 film, "Quantum of Solace" (2008).

With Daniel Craig having finished his tour a duty as 007, a new era for the top MI6 agent is right around the corner, and what better way to liven up the adventures of our hero than by exploring the possibilities of a bisexual James Bond?

5. Pirates of the Caribbean
Pirates_Franchise
Sure, Johnny Depp’s flamboyant Captain Jack Sparrow has been a campy good time across four Pirates films, but with a fifth one (and possibly more) on the way, is it too much to ask that one of his shipmates prefer to sail the same-sex seas?

6. X-Men
Xmen_Franchise
Technically we have seen an LGBT character prominently featured in the X-Men films thanks to the inclusion of the gender and sexually fluid Mystique, but the blue shapeshifter has always been presented as a heterosexual female in Fox’s films. The X-Men universe is filled with rich, queer characters, and it’s way past time the biggest LGBT allegory in comics actually featured some of them on the big screen.

 7. The Jason Bourne Saga
Bourne_Saga
The creative minds behind these films already started to explore new ways to expand the Bourne universe with 2012’s The Bourne Legacy – which featured original character Aaron Cross (played by Jeremy Renner) rather than Jason Bourne.  Introducing a gay or lesbian protagonist at the center of a future Bourne installment would be a bold (and welcome) first for a popular spy thriller franchise.

8. The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Marvel_Franchise
The fact #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend recently began trending on Twitter should make it glaringly obvious to Marvel Studio execs that fans are tired of perceived subtext (come on, Cap is totally in love with Bucky) and are ready for the real deal. It’s time for Marvel to give us an LGBT Avenger (or two) who can hold their own alongside the world’s greatest superheroes.

9. The DC Cinematic Universe
DC_Franchise
While the interconnected big-screen adventures of DC Comics’ iconic characters have only just begun, fans have hope this franchise will embrace LGBT characters where it’s Marvelous competition has failed. With the bisexual Harley Quinn appearing in this summer’s Suicide Squad there’s an excellent opportunity to at least recognize heterosexuals aren’t the only people who exist in this fantastic universe. It’s a theme that could be continued in next year’s Wonder Woman feature film (which could easily acknowledge there is bound to be some same-sex romance happening on an island full of Amazons), before finally featuring an LGBT hero (or villain) among the cast of characters slated to appear in the Justice League films.

John policie I will survive

A Scottish police officer stunned gay bar patrons earlier this week by performing a karaoke rendition of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” after dealing with a disturbance at the Waterloo Bar in Glasgow City Centre.

The Evening Times reports:

The Police Scotland cop – known only as Sergeant John – and three colleagues had been called to deal with an incident outside the Waterloo Bar in Glasgow city centre on Wednesday night.

After interviewing people in the bar and studying CCTV tapes, the officer was persuaded to perform on stage by the karaoke compere.

Said host Katie Boyle on Facebook: “So I managed to get Sargent John to sing in the Waterloo bar today after a wee incident !!”

Drake Debuts Justin Bieber Remix of ‘One Dance’ on Beats 1 Radio Show: LISTEN

Justin Bieber

Drake released a much-hyped Justin Bieber remix of his first #1 hit, “One Dance”, on his Beats 1 radio show on Saturday.

HNHH reported:

The remix was played at an A-list party last week attended by the likes of Gabrielle Union, who recorded the moment on Snapchat. Bieber had been hyping up tonight’s episode since yesterday, when he big-upped Drake with a picture of the Canadian flag. Late into his mix, Drake supplied the goods. The remix is a bit more poppy and less clubby than the original, though it’s sure to be welcomed at any summer party.

Also premiered were new collaborations with Gucci Mane and a new solo track.

L.A. Times Endorses Hillary Clinton Ahead of California Primary

L.A. Times Endorses Hillary Clinton Ahead of California Primary

Hillary Clinton

The Los Angeles Times has chosen its candidate, and that candidate is Hillary Clinton.

Both candidates have campaigned aggressively in the state despite its lateness on the campaign calendar and Clinton’s nearly insurmountable lead in delegates. A first-place finish in California would enable Clinton to strengthen her moral as well as mathematical claim to the nomination. But if Sanders were to prevail, even narrowly, he would be emboldened in his effort to convince so-called super-delegates to shift their support from Clinton to him.

That is a long-shot campaign even if Sanders finishes first in California, not because the nomination process is rigged in Clinton’s favor —  it isn’t – but because she has been more successful in appealing to voters. She has dominated the primaries, amassing 3 million more votes than Sanders (who has fared much better in caucuses) and she leads in pledged delegates. For that reason, some argue that Sanders supporters in this state should resign themselves to the inevitable and vote for Clinton on Tuesday.

We don’t agree. Voters should choose the candidate they consider best qualified. This page has endorsed Clinton not because she is more likely to win the nomination but because she is vastly better prepared than Sanders for the presidency.

Sanders yesterday said that the Democratic convention will be a contested convention.

Said Sanders:

“The media is in error when they lump superdelegates with pledged delegates. Pledged delegates are real. Hillary Clinton will not have the requisite number of pledged delegates to win the Democratic nomination at the end of the nominating process on June 14. Won’t happen. She will be dependent on superdelegates…The Democratic National Convention will be a contested convention.”

Adds CNN:

Clinton currently has 2,313 total delegates — 1,769 of which are pledged and 544 of which are superdelegates — and she is expected to cross the 2,383-delgate threshold in the next few days to clinch the nomination. But Sanders, who has 1,501 pledged delegates and only 46 superdelegates, says he can still woo enough of her superdelegates between now and the Democratic convention in July to swing the nomination his way.

It’s a tall order.

Watch Sanders speak:
