Kidnapped Honduran LGBTQ Rights Activist Found Dead

The body of Rene Martinez, a 40-year-old LGBTQ rights activist, was found in the city of San Pedro Sula, The Washington Blade reported. Martinez, who was kidnapped last week, had apparently been strangled.

Martinez was the president of a LGBTQ advocacy organization in San Pedro Sula. A member of Honduras’ ruling National Party, Martinez took part in an LGBTQ political empowerment conference organized last year in the capital Tegucigalpa. That conference was also attended by Randy Berry, U.S. Special Envoy for the Rights of LGBTI Persons, and Tamara Adrian, the first openly transgender person to be elected to Venezuela’s National Assembly.

“Crimes like these against our fellow LGBTQ activists in other parts of the world remind us of the horrific hate and violence that are a lived daily reality for many in our community.” HRC Global Director Ty Cobb. “ HRC Global is committed to working in solidarity with global activists to combat hate and violence.”

In a statement issued on Friday, the U.S. Embassy in Honduras condemned the “apparent murder” of Martinez in “the strongest terms” and called for a “full and thorough investigation into the circumstances of the death.” The U.S. Government has offered to assist Honduran authorities to bring Martinez’s killers to justice.

Violence and discrimination against LGBTQ people in Honduras is rampant, according to the Blade. A U.N. human rights report in June 2015 had expressed concern about the inflammatory and hateful rhetoric deployed against LGBTQ people in the country. The city of San Pedro Sula has been wracked by gang violence and drug trafficking related crimes for years and several prominent LGBTQ activists have been victims of violence in recent years.

HRC learned about the epidemic of violence in Honduras and the toll it is taking on the LGBTQ community from three Honduran activists who visited us last October. The violence against transgender Hondurans is especially severe and perpetrators act with impunity. According to Transgender Europe (TGEU), the country has the highest number of killings of transgender people relative to its population.

Well, it’s official. In case you haven’t heard, Hillary Clinton has clinched the Democratic party’s nomination for president. The AP called it last night.

Of course, reactions have been mixed. Not everyone is pleased with this news. Nor do they seem to fully understand the historical implications. A woman has been nominated for president by a major political party for the first time in our nation’s history. That’s huge.

Republican Group Backs Garland Confirmation

Republican Group Backs Garland Confirmation

Post submitted by HRC Law Fellow James Shygelski

Today, businessman and former ambassador Earle I. Mack urged Republican leaders to “stop being the unreasonable party” and confirm President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, to fill the Supreme Court vacancy.

In a full page ad in The New York Times, Mack called upon “Republican hardliners in the Senate, blinded by politics,” to put aside the Presidential race and “acknowledge the danger facing our country by holding hostage the confirmation of Chief Judge Garland.”  His endorsement of the president’s nominee praised the Chief Judge’s credentials and his history of being “fair in his rulings,” attributes that would make him “a fine Justice.”

This plea to the party, however, comes at a time when “polls show little hope for a long-shot Republican victory in the Presidential election,” and six Republican-held Senate seats are considered “endangered.”

Mack continued to warn leaders “it is far better to confirm a known variable” than to risk the loss of Republican credibility, control of the Senate, and the ability to confirm or reject future Presidential nominations.” In this effort to redeem the Republican legacy through confirmation, Mack hoped to send a message to the country that Republicans in Congress are “ready to work” and are not just “the party of no.”

HRC is committed to ending the obstruction of the judicial confirmation process, and earlier this year, HRC joined dozens of progressive advocacy organizations around the country for the #DoYourJob National Day of Action to urge Senate Republicans to fulfill their constitutional obligation and hold confirmation hearings for Garland’s nomination to the Supreme Court. In addition, last week, HRC hosted a call for LGBT and allied organizations to provide an update on the status of Garland’s nomination, what’s at stake for the LGBT community and ways that groups can help advance the nomination. You can sign HRC’s petition calling on Senator Mitch McConnell to stop playing politics and to fulfill his constitutional obligation here.
