Madonna Says Her Met Ball Outfit Was a Political Statement Against an Ageist and Sexist Society

Madonna Met Ball

In a new Instagram post, Madonna says her Met Ball outfit was a political statement against an ageist and sexist society. The outfit, designed by Riccardo Tischi for Givenchy, consisted of strategic cutouts, draped lace, body jewelry, and thigh-high leather boots.

She was immediately cut down by certain haters across social media.

Writes Madonna on Instagram:

We have fought and continue to fight for civil rights and gay rights around the world. When it comes to Women’s rights we are still in the dark ages. My dress at the Met Ball was a political statement as well as a fashion statement.

The fact that people actually believe a woman is not allowed to express her sexuality and be adventurous past a certain age is proof that we still live in an age-ist and sexist society. I have never thought in a limited way and I’m not going to start. We cannot effect change unless we are willing to take risks By being fearless and By taking the road leas (sic) traveled by. Thats how we change history.

If you have a problem with the way I dress it is simply a reflection of your prejudice. I’m not afraid to pave the way for all the girls behind me‼️ As Nina Simone once said, the definition of freedom is being fearless. I remain Unapologetic and a Rebel ❤️ in this life and all the others. Join my fight for Gender. Equality! 🙏🏻

Adele Offers to Be Gay Couple’s Surrogate After They Get Engaged at Her Concert: WATCH

adele surrogate

Adele invited two fans up on stage at her concert in Copenhagen, Denmark last night, who then proceeded to get engaged, surprising the singer, who jumped up and down with joy. She then made them an offer they probably wouldn’t refuse.

The Irish Mirror reports:

In front of the sold-out crowd of 10,000 fans, she said: “Should I be your surrogate if you have children? I’d love to have a baby with someone Swedish.”

Discussing his impromptu proposal on stage, Andre told Danish TV station TV2: “It came as a big surprise that we were up on stage. I made the decision on the spur of the moment – I felt the love! Everyone cheered, it was crazy. I have never heard so much noise!

“I felt like a rock star, and I might think I’m deaf now. But it was the best concert ever.”

Andre also praised Adele for being such a “beautiful” person and for giving him the opportunity to make an unforgettable marriage proposal.

Better quality video is here. There doesn’t seem to be a clip of the additional surrogacy statement but send a link if you find it.

Transgender Woman Reecey Walker Fatally Stabbed in Wichita

Transgender Woman Reecey Walker Fatally Stabbed in Wichita

Reecey Walker, a 32-year-old Black transgender woman from Wichita, Kansas, was fatally stabbed last Sunday, May 1. A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Walker worked for an apartment complex, but friends say Walker planned to work toward becoming a counselor. One of Walker’s friends, to whom the press only referred as Victoria, recalled, “[Walker] wanted to get a degree in psychology or social work to try to become a counselor to help other people try to get through some of the same struggles [Walker] had been through.”

While police have not identified a motive in the attack, they are not investigating it as a hate crime, and the assailant’s mother has said that Walker was attempting to sexually assault the boy when he stabbed Walker. Friends of Walker have publicly refuted the accusations.

While the details of the altercation between Walker and the boy are unclear, it is important in cases like this both to consider the rarity of false reporting by survivors of sexual assault as well as the potential influence of the harmful and false rhetoric portraying transgender people as sexual predators.

Transgender people, and transgender women of color in particular, face disproportionate levels of fatal violence. At least eight other transgender people have been killed this year, and several others have died under unclear circumstances.

Our sincere condolences to the friends and family of Reecey Walker.

HRC Announces Fellowships for 10 Leaders Working to End HIV in America’s Hardest-Hit Communities

HRC Announces Fellowships for 10 Leaders Working to End HIV in America’s Hardest-Hit Communities

Today, HRC Foundation announced its selection of 10 outstanding, young community-based leaders for a nine-month fellowship providing high-level training to elevate their work ending HIV in hard-hit U.S. communities.

The HRC HIV 360° initiative is made possible with support from the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

“We are thrilled to be working with this highly-committed and talented group of young leaders who are absolutely critical to ending the HIVepidemic,” said Mary Beth Maxwell, HRC Senior Vice President for Programs, Research and Training. “Their efforts in American communities hardest hit by HIV are already changing and saving lives. HRC’s HIV 360° program invests in helping them develop management and strategy skills, as well as make valuable contacts in the advocacy world to elevate their work back home.”

“At the Elton John AIDS Foundation, we know how vitally important it is to support and train the next generation of activists and community leaders as a logical extension of our strategy to support HIV-related work being carried out by and for people most affected by the epidemic within their own communities,” said Scott Campbell, Executive Director of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. “Having diverse backgrounds and points of view represented in this exciting group of future young leaders selected for HRC’s HIV 360° Fellowship Program is absolutely crucial. We are so proud to support this unique program and look forward to the important work these young scholars will accomplish for their communities.”

The new HRC HIV 360° fellows are: Andrés Cano, Chair, National Latino AIDS Awareness Day Planning Committee, Tucson, AZ;Thomas Davis, Health Education Specialist, LA LGBT Center, Los Angeles, CA; Nicole Elinoff, Director of Clinical Services, The GLBT Community Center of Central Florida, Orlando, FL; Mardrequs Harris, Public Health Program Director, Tennessee Department of Health, Memphis, TN; Sasanka Jianadasa, Capacity Building and Community Resource Manager, HIPS, Washington, DC; Tyrell Manning, Regional Integration Specialist, Williams and Associates, Inc., St. Louis, MO; Pierre Jamar (PJ) Moton, Interim Clinical Program Manager, Abounding Propensity, Inc., Dallas, TX; Steven Romeo, Executive Director, The Change Project, Birmingham, AL; Milan Sherry, Advisory Board Member, Positively Trans, New Orleans, LA; and Lee Storrow, Executive Director, North Carolina AIDS Action Network, Raleigh, NC.

Bios of the new fellows, as well as a video in which they are featured, can be found here.

This diverse group, which held its first retreat at HRC’s Washington headquarters April 20-25, was chosen from a highly-competitive pool of 89 candidates, all under age 35 and playing leadership roles in community-based organizations and initiatives in two dozen states.

Even as the LGBT community continues to make extraordinary strides in equality, we are still facing staggering rates of HIV in the U.S. – driven largely by misinformation, stigma and societal barriers to information and care, including discrimination and poverty.

  • Roughly one in seven people in the U.S. do not know their HIV status;
  • Of the 1.2 million Americans living with HIV, only 40% are engaged in medical care, only 37% are prescribed antiretroviral therapy, and only 30% have achieved viral suppression.
  • One in four of new HIV transmissions are occurring among young people between the ages of 13 and 24;
  • Gay and bisexual men and transgender women of color continue to bear the biggest HIV burden.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), if HIV incidence rates do not change, half of all Black gay and bisexual men will be diagnosed with HIV within their lifetime, along with one quarter of Latino gay and bisexual men, and one in eleven White gay and bisexual men.

Through the HRC HIV 360° initiative, the new fellows will be deepening their skills to manage a nonprofit organization or initiative and impact the HIV & AIDS epidemic in their local communities, from leadership and strategy, to marketing, collaboration, finance, and organizational sustainability. At their first retreat, they learned from organizations including amfAR:The Foundation for AIDS Research, AIDS United, Casa Ruby, NAESM Inc., Whitman-Walker Health, and the Kaiser Family Foundation.

NC Gov. Pat McCrory Seems Angry and Prepared to Defy Justice Department on HB 2 Order: WATCH

NC Gov. Pat McCrory Seems Angry and Prepared to Defy Justice Department on HB 2 Order: WATCH

Pat McCrory justice

Governor Pat McCrory and House Speaker Tim Moore gave no indication that they planned to comply with an order from the Justice Department that they stop enforcing anti-LGBT HB 2 by Monday and seemed to be studying how to defy it, an AP report suggests:

Giving no indication of yielding to pressure, North Carolina’s Republican leaders called a federal warning about the legality of the state’s new law limiting LGBT anti-discrimination rules a broad overreach by the government.

RELATED: Justice Dept. Says HB2 Violates Civil Rights Act; Gives Pat McCrory Monday Deadline…

In fact, McCrory and Moore seemed incensed by the suggestion that they were violating federal law:

I thought it was a very common-sense rule, but the federal government is now saying those are discriminatory practices,” McCrory said during a Wednesday evening forum with the state’s chamber of commerce in Raleigh.

McCrory and House Speaker Tim Moore, who helped pass the law the governor signed in March, said separately they would be examining the state’s options. Moore told reporters the letter to McCrory was an attempt by President Barack Obama’s administration to push a “radical left agenda” in his final months in office.

“Basic concepts — common sense about privacy and expectations of privacy — are getting thrown out the window by what the Obama administration is trying to do in this,” Moore said.

The Justice Department told McCrory in a letter yesterday that HB 2 violates Title IX of the Civil Rights Act which deals with discrimination based on gender and that he had till Monday to indicate whether they planned to continue enforcing the law and risk hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding.

Attorney General Roy Cooper, who is running against McCrory in the gubernatorial election, released this statement:

Enough is enough. It’s time for the Governor to put our schools and economy first and work to repeal this devastating law.

— Roy Cooper (@RoyCooperNC) May 4, 2016

In an interview with the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce, McCrory called the order an “overreach” by the Obama administration.

“This is one interpretation by one agency.”

When asked if it will end up in the courts, McCrory says “I don’t know.”

Said McCrory: “I don’t think it’s the federal government’s decision but based upon the justice ruling today, apparently now it is the federal government’s decision to determine your restroom, locker room, and shower policies…”

McCrory also continued to submit the fantastical allegation that HB 2 was started by “the Left” and is a coordinated plot by the Human Rights Campaign and Democrats to vote him out of office. He also suggested that the Title IX rules were a sneak attack on him and were snuck into contracts that he had already signed.

“We anticipate the next move would be financial…we don’t know what the ramifications will be…This is being initiated by the Obama administration. Now there are contracts on my desk for federal funding that all of a sudden within these very thick contracts have restroom policies. These were not in our contracts a year ago that I signed for federal money. They’ve been slid in by the administration. So obviously this is a new initiative by the Obama administration which is coordinated through the Human Rights Commission (sic) which is coordinated through political campaigns both at the local level and the statewide level and also coordinated through some other Super PACS including Progress North Carolina and some protesters that are blowing horns right outside the mansion as we speak.”

McCrory also says he “doesn’t know” when asked his opinion about presenting the measure as a constitutional amendment as NC Senator Tom Apodaca has suggested.

Here are McCrory’s full remarks last night about the order:

And Tim Moore is standing by the bill, according to this WRAL report:
