The GLAAD Wrap: 'Snervous' now available; 'Grace and Frankie' renewed; Peter Nowalk inks new deal, and more!
1) YouTuber Tyler Oakley’s documentary film, Snervous, is making its digital and theatrical debut today. The movie follows Oakley on his U.S. and Canadian “Slumber Party” tour and follows him home to Michigan to get to know his family. Snervous is available on iTunes, Google Play and Vimeo, with theatrical screenings in select cities. Check out the trailer below.
2) The Girl King was released on VOD platforms this week after having its limited theatrical release on December 4. It tells the story of Christina, Queen of Sweden whose romantic relationships with women were well documented, and who defied gender expectations of her time, never marrying or having children. Check out a clip from the film below.
3) This year’s African American Film Critics Association Award winners were announced this past week. Several LGBT-inclusive films and television shows were honored, including Dope, How To Get Away With Murder and Survivor’s Remorse. The group’s Top Ten films of 2015 included Dope, The Danish Girl, and Carol. You can find a complete list of winners here, the ceremony will be held February 10 in Los Angeles.
4) Netflix renewed Grace and Frankie for a third season. The renewal comes even ahead of the second season, for which a 2016 premiere date has not yet been announced. The comedy stars Golden Globe-nominated out actress Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as sworn enemies who suddenly find common ground when their husbands (played by Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) leave them for each other.
5) BBC America announced that London Spy will premiere on Thursday, January 21. Starring out actor Ben Whishaw, the series follows Danny, who finds himself surrounded by the complex world of espionage when his boyfriend Alex goes missing. Watch the trailer below.
6) Tia Mowry has joined the cast of FOX’s Rosewood as Cassie, Pippy’s (Gabrielle Dennis) previous partner. Cassie, a former homeless teen, will be a recurring character. How to Get Away with Murder creator Peter Nowalk signed a three-year deal with ABC Studios to develop new projects for the network, he will continue as executive producer and showrunner on How to Get Away With Murder. The first preview of The 100 was released this week, the series returns January 21.
7) Out actress Samira Wiley is lending her voice to the new three-part series The Walking Dead video game by Telltale Games. The Orange is the New Black star did the voice work for the character of Michonne, and animated her untold journey, being haunted by her past and coping with unimaginable loss and regret. Walking Dead: Michonne will be available for PC/Mac, Playstation, Xbox, and both iOS and Android devices. Catch Wiley as Michonne at the end of this new trailer.
8) Stacked Deck Press is running a crowdsourcing campaign for ALPHABET, a comic anthology featuring over 40 LGBTQ comic creators. The project commemorates the ‘Queer Press Grant’, its past winners, and compelling applicants. It will also showcase the work of industry veterans who paved the way for queer comics, as well as talented newcomers who are documenting current and emerging LGBT perspectives.
