Justin Bieber and Alan Carr Have a ’50 Shades of Grey’ Moment: WATCH

Justin Bieber Alan Carr

Justin Bieber and Alan Carr sat down for Carr’s UK talk show Chatty Man on Friday. Bieber dropped most of the attitude and was game for Carr’s brand of direct questioning, innuendo, and ridiculous stunts.

First Carr asked Bieber about his new album, noting that he announced it by getting a tattoo of the album’s title on his abs.

“You’re looking ripped at the moment,” says Carr. “I want to know how you got the cock trench? The V?”

Carr then questioned Bieber about crying at his VMAs performance: “Was it the emotions or the tightness of that harness, because I was in a harness last week…one of my testicles was here, and one was over here.”

Finally, Carr then asked Bieber to blindfold him and throw Maltesers into his mouth, joking that they were having a 50 Shades of Grey moment before challenging Bieber to a race in red high heels.

James Neish is a freelance comic book artist and lover of geek culture. An Art School graduate living in Nova Scotia Neish’s artwork has a vitality to it that makes his images burst with energy. As an out artist Neish brings a clever eye to his take on pop culture icons.

The Advocate sat down for a chat with this up-and-coming artist about his inspirations, his love for the X-Men’s Psylocke, and how being queer influences his work.

The Advocate: What inspires you to create?
Neish: I’m not sure what inspires me to create, some kind of desire to make something that wasn’t there before, I guess. I’ve been drawing and making stuff up since before I could talk and I feel like I wouldn’t be a functional person if I didn’t create something soon and always. So to me, creation is just the scratch to the proverbial itch of being human.

Does being queer influence your artwork?
I came out during a performance art piece in university, so yeah, it’s a bit of an influence. Like most young gay art students I drew and painted my way through my coming-out experience, my first relationship, and so on. I think it’s important to stand for ideas that you believe in when you work and as an illustrator, I hope it’s that queer influence I transmit into my work that gives my artwork some positive influence as well.

What was your gateway art drug into the world of geek culture?
I think I started super young with Thundercats. I was pretending to be Cheetara before I even knew what a gay geek was. Also, Jim Lee’s covers for X-Men back in 1991. That was when I fell in love with comics.

What geeky things are you currently obsessed with?
Well, I’m freelancing as a comic book illustrator now so that’s pretty geeky. Besides that, I’ve been binge-watching Death Note, just ate up Sword Art Online, currently reading Saga and Avatar: The Promise.

You must have a favorite superhero character, right? Who might it be?
Psylocke.

Open Question: A Tranny came on TV and I ask my mum on what she thought about them ?
So I ask her and she said they can be what they want, could she be hinting that see might approve of the LGBT community and will support me if I came out Bisexual because she and my aunt cooked the food for my gay cousin wedding like 2 years ago and her friend that is really close in the family, brother is a tranny and I think she fine with it, but my stepdad on the other hand just laugh at it and say you born a man you stay a man same apply to women to.

I like girl but at my lower school I had 3 girlfriend one by one but unfortunately they all left the school and that didn’t help my confidents at all.

and other thing should I ware my top tuck in because my mum know that gay because of gay people on TV, so should I hint it out, and this boy at my collage keep looking at me, he look at my *** and then the floor, and when we was watching a movie he turn around and look at me and I said turn around and he did listening to me but not my friend, and as soon as the movie finish he straight away look at me, what could that mean.

Houston Bigot Who Led Anti-HERO Campaign Advocates ‘Reparative Therapy’ For Trans People

TransRally

A group of transgender activists and allies staged a rally in Houston on Saturday in response to voters’ decision to repeal the city’s Equal Rights Ordinance.

Meanwhile, the leader of one of the groups opposing HERO is now advocating reparative therapy for trans people.

From The Houston Chronicle‘s report on Saturday’s rally:

In a city where few folks know transgender people, everyone knows about them on the heels of Proposition 1, an ordinance that would have granted protections to several groups of people, but that opponents feared would allow men to use women’s restrooms.

“We are here to say ‘We are not going to rape you in the bathroom,’ ” said Olivia Maynard, 41, a transgender woman with tidy makeup, flowing hair and a loose blouse. …

Nikki Araguz Loyd, founder of the Transgender National Alliance, which organized the rally, said coverage promoted a shallow, simplified notion of what a trans person is.

“Our mission is to create a new perception of trans people,” she said. “Not a stereotype.”

WelchDave Welch, executive director of the US Pastor Council, which led opposition to the ordinance, told the Chronicle in response to the rally that trans people are disrespecting the Christian God by wanting a body other than the one he created for them:

He said they suffered a “mental disorder” that should be “healed,” not affirmed by accommodative policies.

People do not have the right to choose their gender, he said, and should seek Biblical therapy to settle their confusion.

Welch’s group was behind a petition drive to repeal HERO, which was approved by the City Council in May 2014. The city rejected the petition, saying it didn’t have enough valid signatures. And both a judge and a jury upheld the city’s decision, saying the petition contained rampant forgery. However, the elected, all-Republican Texas Supreme Court later ruled that the city had to repeal the ordinance or place it on the ballot.

In a celebratory email last week, Welch called HERO’s defeat by voters “one of the greatest victories for God’s righteousness and justice in this nation in decades”:

The overwhelming defeat of Houston Proposition 1 in spite of a massive, nationally supported propaganda campaign by the Human Rights Campaign, ACLU, President Obama, Hillary Clinton, etc. was truly a shot heard around the world for God’s righteousness and justice.

The angry, defamatory and vicious responses by Mayor Parker only prove to illustrate how personal this was to her, having nothing to do with what is right or what is best for the people of the City of Houston. The breathtaking 22 point margin (61-39) “stunned” the national LGBT activists – and yet we must remember that they are passionately committed to destroying all vestiges of the Judeo-Christian foundations of our nation. The increased turnout of 27%, (268,459 votes cast, 979,401 registered) while still with MUCH room to improve, buried projections and recent turnout numbers, most of it attributed to the churches and No on Proposition 1 vote. …

The innumerable stories in national media illustrate the profound impact that our tenacity and effort, favored by God’s grace, has had on the nation and only in the days, months and years ahead will we know its full scope on turning the people and country back to God.

Watch Adele Belt Out 'Hello' Like The Boss She Is

Watch Adele Belt Out 'Hello' Like The Boss She Is

Adele followed up her first live performance in three years with a second that was just as powerful. Would we ever expect anything less?

The 27-year-old performed her record-breaking single “Hello” at the NRJ Awards in France on Saturday night, and to put it simply, she stole the show. The singer took to the stage in an all-black ensemble (with the perfect touch of shimmer) and looked perfectly at home behind the mic.

You can watch a clip of the performance below — you might want to grab some tissues.

Other stars who were present at the NRJ Awards included Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding.

On Friday, a clip of Adele’s first live performance since the 2013 Oscars — part of a new BBC special —  was released online. The singer also sat down for a Q&A session with Graham Norton for the special, which is set to air later this month.

Adele, it’s good to have you back.

TELEVISION: Donald Trump gave SNL its biggest ratings since 2012: “According to NBC, SNL had a 6.6 household rating last night, easily beating the season’s previous high too — the 41st season premiere last month hosted by Miley Cyrus, and with a guest appearance by none other than … Hillary Clinton.”

FILM: Tom Hanks accepts the Outfest 2015 Trailblazer Award:

Hanks: “It turns out, we all know someone that is gay or lesbian or transgender and there is an excellent chance that we love them exactly as they are. It turns out, the pandemic that was — and still is — AIDS made for a horrifying passing, and the loss of so many has made the world a lesser place, and care for those still in need of care remains a burden we must share. And, it turns out, that the United States of America was not broken by the homophobia of that time nor by the attendant prejudice, ignorance and intolerance. We the people have continued on in the formation of a more perfect union. Yes, there are those who wish to codify inequality and continue to promote fear and outrage rather than recognize the strengths evident in our diversity. but the truth will have its day, that our nation is wiser and stronger because we are more open and increasingly honest about what love really is — “a force as constant as the speed of light and surely as good as the warmth of our own sun.”

AVIATION: Plane had close call with missile over Egypt in August: “A plane carrying British holidaymakers to Sharm el-Sheikh came within 300 metres (1,000ft) of a missile as it neared the Egyptian airport in August, the government has confirmed. A Thomson Airways flight from London Stansted to the Red Sea resort, carrying 189 passengers, took evasive action after the missile was spotted in its trajectory by the pilot. The crew of flight TOM 476 landed the plane safely and passengers were not advised of the incident, which occurred on 23 August.”

HONG KONG: Second-highest-ranked Catholic compares homosexuality to drug abuse: “The church doesn’t have any enemy and it wouldn’t criticise anyone. It was only talking about a wrong-doing. For example, it was wrong to [abuse] drugs and we would say so, but we still love drug addicts,” Yeung said.

THEATRE: New plays explore modern gay life: “Mr. Gerrard seized on those anxieties for ‘Steve,’ a comic drama opening on Nov. 18 in a New Group production. In the play, the longtime partners Steven and Stephen (Matt McGrath and Malcolm Gets), are raising a son conceived with a surrogate while chafing at the confines of domesticity. Similarly, Peter Parnell’s ‘Dada Woof Papa Hot,’ which opens on Monday at Lincoln Center Theater, shows a married couple, Alan and Rob, trying to navigate the relatively new territory of gay marriage and gay parenthood.

NATUREOrca Responsibility and Care Advancement (ORCA) Act would “phase out the captivity of orcas so that their display ends with this generation.”. The legislation, which would ban breeding, wild capture, and import or export of orcas for the purpose of public exhibition, would eventually put an end to SeaWorld’s controversial“Shamu Shows.”

FRANK BRUNI: Sex, Lies, and Houston: “And we’ll someday cringe about this, just as most Americans now cringe about the verbal garbage that was thrown at gay people, the lies that were told, the lies that were believed. I recently ran across some research that made reference to a 1970 survey in which 73.5 percent of Americans agreed that ‘homosexuals are dangerous as teachers or youth leaders because they try to get sexually involved with children’ and 71.1 supported the statement that ‘homosexuals try to play sexually with children if they cannot get an adult partner.’”

Injustice in Zambia: Transgender Woman Faces 15 Years For 'Deceiving' Man

Injustice in Zambia: Transgender Woman Faces 15 Years For 'Deceiving' Man

A transgender woman in Zambia reportedly faces 15 years in prison for the crime of sodomy after a man she met claimed he was “deceived” by her, reported the Washington Blade.

A newspaper in that African country, The Zambia Daily Mail, misgendered the trans woman, deadenamed her and referred to her as a “fake woman” in its headline on October 31, reporting that Magistrate Derrick Mate Chingumbe convicted the trans woman in a court in the country’s Mongu District.

The newspaper identified the trans woman as a 27-year-old hairdresser.

The plaintiff was a 19-year-old taxi driver, who told the court that he met her at a local bar in September. He told the court that the defendant was dressed as a woman when they first met, according to the newspaper. The cabbie testified that the trans woman asked him to turn off the lights before they had anal sex

Judge Chingumbe granted the trans woman bail and said she could appeal the verdict to the Zambian High Court, after announcing her conviction.

“I have concluded that Bril [the last name of the trans woman] did actually permit the taxi driver to have carnal knowledge of him. In fact, he was made to believe that he was actually going to sleep with a woman and a woman only because of the way he [the trans woman] was dressed, and he [the trans woman] had long hair.”

The Washington Blade asked U.S. State Department spokesperson John Kirby on Wednesday during his daily press briefing about the trans woman’s conviction. He had not seen the report, Kirby said.

“If it’s true, it would be deeply concerning to the United States,” he said.

The Zambian government was asked by the Blade for comment but at press time had not yet responded.

Lingerie Made For Queer People? Now There's A Boutique For That

Lingerie Made For Queer People? Now There's A Boutique For That

A groundbreaking new boutique is bringing together and creating spaces for lingerie collections that cater exclusively to queer- and trans-identified individuals.

Jeanna Kadlec recently launched Bluestocking Boutique, an online resource for an often-ignored fashion need for the queer community. Mainstream lingerie companies tend to cater exclusively to specific types of bodies and individuals. Kadlec saw this as a need for a more expansive way of thinking about lingerie.

While not a designer, Kadlec’s boutique brings together different independent brands and fashion lines designed with queer bodies in mind. “I wanted to curate a collection that would appeal to a wide range of styles and also operate an inclusive store where queer– and trans-identified people could have the guarantee of being treated with basic dignity,” she told The Huffington Post.

The Huffington Post chatted with Kadlec this week about Bluestockings Boutique and the ways in which she envisions it serving the needs of the queer community.

What is Bluestockings Boutique?

Jeanna Kadlec: Bluestockings Boutique is an alternative lingerie and underthings boutique geared to the LGBTQIA+ community. We are committed to providing independently designed, ethically manufactured underthings to people in a safe, inclusive environment.

I got the idea for Bluestockings and ran with it immediately, in spite of having no business background or money. As a queer-identified, femme presenting person, I liked lingerie, but partners and friends would never go shopping with me — either the environment wasn’t safe and/or they felt like the stores had nothing for them. I wanted to curate a collection that would appeal to a wide range of styles and also operate an inclusive store where queer– and trans-identified people could have the guarantee of being treated with basic dignity — where their pronouns could be respected, where they could ask fitting questions and get an honest and intelligent answer, where they could have discreet shipping. Where their needs would be thought about in advance. Where they were valued as customers.
Why is this kind of representation so crucial for queer and trans-identified individuals?

Representation is not an idea; it’s a practice. I think at the end of the day, brands and boutiques really have to practice what they preach, because advertisements and imagery indicate who your target customer is and who you want your customer to be. It’s not enough to say “We like you!” while continuing to produce images of classically beautiful thin, white models who operate within the heteronormative gender binary.

In what way is this project challenging beauty norms?

This project represents everyday people who, bluntly, are never represented in lingerie imagery and are rarely represented in fashion. They are all explicitly queer, trans and non-binary identified, and the mere presence of our bodies in this industry is disruptive — lingerie in the United States is all about the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, or thin white women in luxury silk loungewear on a chaise lounge. It’s not queers in their underwear playing video games, decidedly not pandering to the male gaze, wearing what they want to wear on their own terms.

Also, the models’ bodies have not been retouched or “photoshopped” in any way. For all that “no photoshop” itself has become a buzzword, like with Aerie’s Emma Roberts campaign, I think it’s notable to show a variety of everyday bodies that you would actually see on the street with no retouching.

What do you want people to take away from these images?

That they are seen, and they matter. Especially folks who the mainstream ignores. You are seen, and you matter.
