Rumored LGBT ‘Sneak Attack’ Inspires Christian Panic Rally in Indiana

indiana

Tuesday is the organizational session for the Indiana legislature and “two busloads and several caravans” of Christians are planning to meet them to protest legislation intended to protect LGBT citizens.

indianaThe Christians are being motivated by a rumored “sneak attack” to pass the legislation on the first day, NWI.com reports:

At least some of those people will have been motivated by two widely shared Internet videos featuring Eric Miller, executive director of the pro-family group Advance America, warning of an Organization Day “sneak attack” by lawmakers in favor of LGBT protections.

While it is technically possible to enact legislation in one day, both House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, and Senate President David Long, R-Fort Wayne, have declared there is no “sneak attack” planned, and no proposals will be considered Tuesday.

LGBT rights group Freedom Indiana plans to be there as well, with its own rally.

Last year, as you recall, the legislature passed a “religious freedom” bill pushed by Governor Mike Pence that would have allowed businesses to discriminate against gay couples and got nationwide attention. After the measure made headlines, lawmakers put in a “fix” barring discrimination under the guise of religious liberty.

Hoosiers on both sides are on high alert and a proposal to add gender identity and sexual orientation to the state’s civil rights laws was proposed last month by Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane, D-Anderson.

WATCH: Missing Gay Man's Body Found Near Torched Truck in Houston Suburb

WATCH: Missing Gay Man's Body Found Near Torched Truck in Houston Suburb

Investigators in Montgomery County, Texas, are reportedly close to making an arrest in the murder of Marc Pourner, 28, whose body was found Saturday night in a wooded area near the shell of his burned-out truck, reported Texas LGBT website About News.

Pourner vanished Thursday after receiving a ‘disturbing’ late night phone call. His family grew worried when he failed to show up for work as a bookkeeper last week.

Houston TV station KTRK reported Sunday that investigators were led to the scene where Pourner’s body was found . According to About News, the tip came from a “person of interest” who is connected to the victim.  Pourner’s body had been gagged and tied, and there were indications of blunt force trauma to the head, according to About. An autopsy is expected to be performed today.

Pourner’s family told KTRK they believe he was the victim of a hate crime because he was gay

“In our discussion with the detectives one of the first things I told them when they briefed us this morning was that one of the things that struck me about how this crime was carried out was the speed and cold efficiency that it took place with,” said the victim’s father, Mark Pourner.  “I told the detective that in my opinion that indicated to me that this person has probably killed before and I have no doubt that they would kill again.”

His relatives say Pourner was a good friend to many and had a big heart.

Anyone with information is asked to call Montgomery County Crime Stoppers at 800-392-STOP.

This New App Aims To Build An All-Inclusive Queer Online Community

This New App Aims To Build An All-Inclusive Queer Online Community

A new app launched last week that claims to be the first gender-inclusive social network for individuals identifying all across the spectrum of queer identity.

Called “Q,” the app’s availability follows a massively successful Kickstarter campaign. While other queer apps tend to cater more towards specific kinds of bodies and modes of connections, “Q” wants complicate the way that the community meets and interacts with one another in online space.

“Racist, misogynistic, and dehumanizing comments are endemic on these platforms,” CEO Eric Cervini said of the need for Q in world of apps catering towards to lesbian, gay bisexual and queer (LGBT) community. “Not a single inclusive, queer, platonic app exists for our community… The Kickstarter demonstrated how much demand there is for an inclusive, human, queer online community.”

Cervini then added, “Our supporters gave us fantastic ideas and feedback as we perfected the app, and we look forward to adopting the suggestions and critiques of our new users.”

Check out the video above to learn more about “Q.” iPhone users can currently download the app, while Android users can join the waiting list here.

Bullied at work? Study finds workplace harassment is on the rise

Bullied at work? Study finds workplace harassment is on the rise

To coincide with Anti-Bullying Week in the UK (16-20 November), the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) has issued a report on bullying in the workplace.

The organization says that it receives around 20,000 calls related to bullying and harassment each year, and has estimated that the annual cost to the economy in terms of lost productivity is around £18billion ($27billion/€25.5billion).

LGBT people are one of the group’s that it identifies as being particularly prone to harassment in the workplace, alongside public sector ethnic minority workers; professional and management occupations; women in traditionally male-dominated occupations; and workers with disabilities, among others.

The report, Seeking better solutions: tackling bullying and ill-treatment in Britain’s workplaces states that rather than diminishing, the problem is getting worse: In 1998, managers in 7% of workplaces reported grievances raised concerning bullying or harassment issues – this rose to 8% in 2004, and to 11% in 2011.

Sir Brendan Barber, Acas chair, said in a statement: ‘Our analysis reveals that bullying is on the rise in Britain and it is more likely to be found in organizations that have poor workplace climates, where this type of behavior can become institutionalized.

‘Callers to our helpline have experienced some horrific incidents around bullying that have included: humiliation; ostracism; verbal; and physical abuse.

‘Managers sometimes dismiss accusations around bullying as simply personality or management style clashes, while others may recognize the problem but lack the confidence or skills to deal with it.’

‘Anti-bullying workplace policies and managers with good people-management skills are essential to deal with the growing problem of bullying.’

The bullying of LGBT people at work is something that has been noted before by UK advocacy group, Stonewall. Alex Gwynne, Senior Account Manager with the organization, said: ‘Lesbian, gay, bi and trans people are disproportionately affected by bullying and discrimination – at work, at school and at home.

‘It’s essential that people are not bystanders to bullying and teasing language, support victims of bullying and call out the perpetrators without putting themselves at risk. Anti-Bullying Week is a time to really reflect on that, and talk about how we can best work towards a world where all LGBT people are accepted without exception.’

Acas is not the only organization to mark Anti-Bullying Week. Trade union TUC also issued statistics on workplace harassment, which revealed that nearly a third of people have been bullied at work.

It said that in nearly three-quarters of cases (72%) the bullying is carried out by a manager, and that more than one in three (36%) of people who report being bullied at work leave their job because of it.

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady told Gay Star Business: ‘LGBT workers are particularly badly affected by bullying at work. Prejudiced attitudes are at the root of this. Unions try both to protect the individual being bullied, and to bring about a workplace culture where such behavior is not tolerated.

‘We need support from workers and management alike to ensure that LGBT workers are safe and supported at work.’

Thomas Anderson, Founder and Director at Inclusive Networks called the Acas report ‘shocking’ and said it emphasized the need for employee network groups.

‘There is clearly lots to be done to change our workplace cultures where everyone can go to work and be treated the same, no matter our differences.’

Gay Man’s Alleged Killer Escapes From Houston Jail, Considered Highly Dangerous – VIDEO

Gay Man’s Alleged Killer Escapes From Houston Jail, Considered Highly Dangerous – VIDEO

Coby

A gay man’s alleged killer is on the loose and considered highly dangerous after escaping from a juvenile detention center in Houston.

Alferis Coby (above right), 16, is charged with capital murder in the death of 22-year-old Carlos Ramirez, who was fatally shot in the parking lot of F Bar, a popular gay club, in March.

Coby, who reportedly has psychopathic tendencies, escaped along with two other juveniles early Sunday.

From The Houston Chronicle:

“I’m worried not only about what he is capable of, but his very demonstrated lack of empathy to other people,” said 315th State District Judge Michael Schneider, who certified Coby to stand trial as an adult in October. “I usually don’t like to talk about kids in our juvenile system, but this is a dangerous kid. I am really worried he is out.”

Authorities said Coby asked for toiletries and then overpowered a guard who opened his cell door to provide them. Coby took the guard’s keys and phone and unlocked two others. The boys, all 16, slipped undetected through the lock-up, then somehow get buzzed through a security door leading to Caroline within 15 minutes.

Some of the detention-center issued white T-shirts and blue shorts the teens were wearing were found a few blocks away.

RamirezAccording to the Chronicle, a court-ordered evaluation determined that Coby has an exceptionally high risk for violence, aggressive tendencies, psychopathic features and extensive criminality.

Ramirez (right) was leaving a talent show at F Bar when Coby and another suspect robbed him, shot him and stole his car after he refused to turn over the keys. The suspects were later found driving Ramirez’s vehicle.

Ramirez’s murder was one of several violent crimes in the city’s gayborhood this spring that led to a “Take Back Montrose” rally and meetings between LGBT activists and police.

Authorities identified one of the other teens who escaped Sunday as Jahrell West (above, left), who faces charges of aggravated robbery and home burglary. The third teen has not been identified because he hasn’t been certified to stand trial as an adult.

Anyone with information on the escapees’ whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.

Watch a report on the escape and ensuing manhunt from KHOU-TV below.

Celebration Today as Ireland Recognizes Same-Sex Marriages

Celebration Today as Ireland Recognizes Same-Sex Marriages

Marriages between same-sex couples are legally recognized in Ireland as of Monday, according to Irish media outlets, but due to delays and Ireland’s complex betrothal system, the first weddings may take place tomorrow.

Dolores Murphy and Mabel Stoop-Murphy plan to be one of the first couples to tie the knot in the country, according to the Irish Independent. The pair have a civil partnership but will obtain a marriage license at the registry office in Cork on Tuesday.

The certificate will finally give Murphy legal rights to the couple’s two-year-old son, according to the paper. However she explained that her wedding day would be emotionally difficulty.

“It will be bittersweet because there will really be just the two of us and our two witnesses,” Murphy told the paper, “We have no family left.”

Murphy’s her father was present to walk both women down the aisle during their civil partnership, but he died in 2013.

“My dad knew Mabel for more than 10 years and he adored her. We’re both so sad that he won’t be here to share this special day with us,” she told the paper.

Same-sex marriages registered abroad will be immediately recognized in Ireland, according to L’Agence France-Presse, while other couples can now submit their intention to marry and begin the archaic three-month long betrothal process.

Vivian Cummins, 57, from Dublin who married his partner Erney in South Africa in 2009 told AFP that before the passage of Ireland’s same-sex marriage referendum it was hard for him to speak openly about his relationship.

“I would never really admit by choice to being married because I didn’t feel married in this country,” he told the wire, “I felt I didn’t have permission to say we were married but from now we will say it at every opportunity.”

In May, Ireland made history by passing marriage equality by popular vote with 62.1 percent of voters in favor of defining marriage as being between two people “without distinction as to their sex.” This was the first time that marriage equality has been passed in a referendum.

It is not known which same-sex couple will be first to wed in the country but “regulatory and procedural issues are expected to require a 24-hour delay,” following today’s legalization according to the Irish Independent.

Those who already have a civil union must sign up to be married and wait a fortnight, or two weeks, according to the Irish Gay and Lesbian Equality Network.

However, in addition to the Cork women’s union, same-sex marriages are already planned for tomorrow for Dublin and Galway, according to the Irish Independent.

Charm and enchantment in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy

Charm and enchantment in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy

Welcome to Basilicata, Italy – a charming region south of Naples with two separate coastlines (touching the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas), two cities/provinces (Potenza and Matera), two souls (mythical forests and Mediterranean shores) and even two names, (it’s also known globally as Lucania).

Forget the Renaissance of Florence, the Baroque of Rome, the magic of Venice and the buzz and fashion of Milan. Forget nightclubs and catwalks. Here, you’ll find the possibility of a countryside holiday in a European environment where almost everything seems to be stuck in time.

Visiting Basilicata, especially the Province of Potenza, will reconcile you with your senses, nature, traditions, good food and myths.

Yes, myths. In Basilicata, some people believe in fairies, witches, evil spirits, destiny and ‘Rumit’ (tree-like men who live in the forests). This area is known to be enchanted throughout Italian literature and has been represented in several films.

The area is also dependent on the seasons – in summer you’ll find lush green landscapes; in autumn, the magic of foliage; in winter, snowy mountains and in spring, blossoming valleys.

Of course, gay life is not absent in southern Italy. You’ll find plenty of it in Naples or in Bari, not far from Basilicata. But my suggestion is simple and basic. Behave like you are not in London, in Sitges, in Madrid or in Berlin. Simply, you are in a part of Italy where the food tastes wonderful, the air is clean and the pace of life slow, relaxed and chilled.

SASSO-di-CASTALDA-2

The Valle del Melandro in the Melandro river valley is one of the secret gems of Basilicata. Waterfalls, woods, small villages and mountains, and encounters with deer, wild boar, eagles and wolves. Here is the National Park of the Lucanian Apennines – Agri Valley – near the town of Lagonegro. The best towns – I’m talking Sasso di Castalda [above], Satriano di Lucania, Brienza, Sant’Angelo le Fratte and Savoia di Lucania – boast beautifully painted houses, enchanting squares, Medieval fountains and, sometimes, towers and castles. The capital city of this region, Potenza, is nested on top of a mountain with some great attractions on offer which deserve consideration.

Being a city of services and institutions, Potenza hosts the best museums in Basilicata, like The National Archeaological Museum of Basilicatau, where you’ll find the treasures of a land which was colonized first by the ancient Greeks and then by the Romans.

But Potenza is also a city of Medieval churches, like the one dedicated to San Francesco d’Assisi and another, even more beautiful, dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo.

CHEESE-SALAMI

A quick word on what Italy’s most famous for: food. Basilicata is known for its red peppers called pepperoni cruschi, which are dried and then deep fried, as well as its Caciocavallo podolico cheese which is as big as a football, and the delicious meat and salami. Obviously there is the pasta. Like the cavatelli, the strascinati or the orecchiette. Nature, traditions, food. This is a small region, but sometimes the best jewels are in the smallest of boxes.

I also spent three days hiking, jumping small rivers and rocks, looking for wildlife and very old trees, breathing the freshest and cleanest air to be found in this part of the world. The sentiero Frassati di Sasso di Castalda, part of the network of footpaths organized by the Italian Alpine Club, is absolutely unmissable.

The small town of Sasso di Castalda lies down in the valley, while on top of the mountain you will find a huge beech tree forest which is very beautiful in early autumn and late spring. Thanks to a professional hiking guide I discovered the secrets of the woods, like the danger which might come from the mushrooms, the magic of an encounter with a solitary wolf or the uniqueness of the water which spills from a mountain spring.

Meanwhile Brienza has just 5,000 inhabitants, but is one of the biggest towns in the valley. It has a Medieval castle, some entertainment and beautiful artworks, like the frescos in the Medieval cloister of the town hall. Unfortunately the castle is not easily accessible at the moment, due to the works which still are in progress after a big earthquake which happened years ago.

Other towns which are worth mentioning are Satriano and Sant’Angelo, famous for the tradition of enriching the houses with vivid colors and mural paintings.

CASCATA-waterfall

I also hiked for 45 minutes to see one of the hidden gems of this valley, the Tuorno waterfalls in the Luceto forest. They are barely indicated in the local maps, so try to ask for a local guide in the town of Savoia di Lucania. The municipality will be happy to help you with your requests.

WHERE TO STAY

In the area there is a lovely bed and breakfast, the Rifugio della Luna, a charming villa with a huge patio and a big garden. Its owners are very kind, the furniture is full of taste and you will also be able to organize dinners and parties. It’s not far from the town of Satriano.

Another nice option is the Fattoriabio, a rural hotel with restaurant. They’ll be able to show you how to cook peppers and local chickpeas. By staying here you will be able to see the best starry nights of your life.

Not far from here, there is also the seaside resort of Maratea, which offers top quality accommodations, like the Hotel Santavenere or the Hotel Villa del Mare.
