WATCH: Bernie Sanders Dances on 'Ellen'

WATCH: Bernie Sanders Dances on 'Ellen'

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders taped an appearance on Ellen Wednesday that showcased skills the politician has rarely shown: his dancing moves and sense of humor.

As part of the show’s tradition, Sanders danced his way on stage, to the tune of The Trammps’ “Disco Inferno.” The show also tweeted a silent clip of Sanders warming-up backstage. Once he made it to the couch, the senator from Vermont good-naturedly answered the host’s questions with some jokes. Known for his serious demeanor and not his sense of humor, the politician bantered his way through the segment with ease.

Asked if he’d ever been in handcuffs, he responded with “I don’t know exactly what you mean by that.” As the audience laughed, he confirmed he had, saying “When I was young, I was involved in a civil rights demonstration, and I was arrested.”

Degeneres joined the fun responding, “All right, let’s call it a civil rights demonstration.”

Sanders, who may be best known for decrying the media’s tendency to ignore important economic and civil rights issues in favor of celebrity gossip and hyped up controversies, even answered the banal tradition of asking presidential candidates whether they wear boxers or briefs. Sanders wears briefs.

Asked what Ben & Jerry’s would name an ice cream flavor made in his honor, the candidate quipped “Burn Bernie Burn” prompting Degeneres to ask “So, it would be hot and spicy ice cream?”

While in Southern California, Sanders announced his campaign had raised $2.5 million since the debate at a fundraiser in West Hollywood featuring actor and comedian Seth McFarlane, and taped an appearance on the HBO talk show Real Time with Bill Maher. That show will air on Friday night at 10pm Eastern.

Watch the clip of Sen. Sanders’s appearance on this Friday’s episode of Ellen, below, and scroll down to see him the clip the show tweeted of him warming-up before being introduced.

Rand Paul Answers Question About LGBT Workplace Discrimination By Telling Them To Find Another Job

Rand Paul Answers Question About LGBT Workplace Discrimination By Telling Them To Find Another Job

At a town hall at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, this week, Rand Paul fielded a question about whether there should be laws protecting LGBT people from workplace discrimination. He demurred, indicating that people should stay closeted at work and suggesting that LGBT people will always be able to find work elsewhere.

“I think really, the things you do in your house we could just leave those in your house and they wouldn’t have to be part of the workplace, to tell you the truth,” he offered. He went on to suggest that such protections would “set up a whole industry of people who want to sue,” noting it’s “almost impossible” to prove someone has been fired for being gay.

“I don’t know that we need to keep adding to different classifications to say the government needs to be involved in the hiring and firing,” Paul continued. “I think society is rapidly changing, and if you are gay, there are plenty of places that will hire you.” Watch it:

Despite how “absurd” Log Cabin Republicans president Gregory Angelo found the comments to be, there is nothing surprising about this position from Paul. In 2013, he voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would have created LGBT workplace protections. And ENDA isn’t even the full extent of his opposition to nondiscrimination protections; he has previously suggested that he doesn’t even “like the idea of telling private business owners” that they can’t discriminate based on race.

Surprising or not, however, Paul’s comments reveal how little he understands about how discrimination plays out.

“Leave those in your house…”

Paul seems to believe that someone who is LGBT should just keep everything about their identity private. If they are gay, lesbian, or bi, that would mean being totally closeted, never mentioning a partner or family, and never having a single conversation about their personal life with coworkers. For transgender people, they’d have to completely suppress their gender identity, endangering their mental health. This closeting would have a negative impact not just on the employees, but on the entire workplace and economy.

Studies have found that employees who feel safe coming out perform better and even advance more quickly in their careers, while those who hide their identities languish in their careers. What’s more, being out actually improves the productivity of their non-LGBT colleagues, because being out creates trust while remaining closeted raises doubt.

What’s more, workplace discrimination is still a much bigger issue for LGBT people than Paul suggests. Though it’s true, as he noted, that many big companies now have inclusive policies, LGBT employees still prefer to work in the few states that protect against sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination at the state level. Nationwide, over half of LGBT workers still hide their identities in the workplace in fear of unfair treatment.

Paul has not kept his sexual identity at home as he suggests others should have to. His offices feature pictures of his family, his presidential campaign features pictures of his family, and his wife even held the Bible when he was sworn into office.

“A whole industry of people who want to sue…”

The claim that LGBT protections would lead to excessive litigation is not new. Other skeptics of the protections, like Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) and Rep. Tom Cotton (R-AR), have made the same argument in the past.

Paul couched his point in the idea that it would be difficult to prove that the discrimination took place because of a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. That’s actually true in some cases, but no moreso than proving any other kind of discrimination that is already protected, like discrimination based on race or religion. Because there is less still less stigma around anti-LGBT discrimination, it’s actually easier to prove in many cases.

For example, when a transgender employee at a Hobby Lobby in Illinois wasn’t allowed to use the restroom because of her gender identity, the discrimination was blatant; Hobby Lobby not only admitted to it but fought to continue it. Catholic-affiliated organizations regularly fire teachers or other employees for coming out as gay or for marrying their partners, telling the employees directly why they can no longer work there. Outlawing discrimination may decrease the acceptability — and thus the rate — of such blatant discrimination, but that would, in fact, be the point of passing such laws.

If a lot of lawsuits were filed, as Paul claims, then that would actually suggest that a lot of discrimination was taking place, contradicting his claim that it isn’t. Either way, the point is easy to reject because many states have had LGBT protections for some time, and no “industry” of litigation has arisen.

Moreover, it’s simply not true. Studies have shown that allowing discrimination adds to businesses’ costs, while policies of fairness and inclusion add to their profits.

“There are plenty of places that will hire you…”

By suggesting that LGBT people can just find a job elsewhere, Paul is rejecting the reality that harm happens when discrimination happens. If a person is fired or not hired for being LGBT, they stop receiving an income, and they may not even lose references that would help them get the next job. This can lead to poverty and a downward spiral that makes it even harder to find that hypothetical next job.

This is particularly true for transgender people. The 2011 National Transgender Discrimination Survey found that nearly 90 percent of trans people had experienced harassment or mistreatment on the job. They experience unemployment at double the national rate — quadruple the national rate if they are people of color. This has led to dire poverty for 15 percent of respondents (household income under $10,000/year), and 16 percent have turned to underground employment, including 11 percent who turned to sex work, because they could find no other job.

The picture just isn’t as rosy as Paul seems to believe. Democrats in Congress have introduced The Equality Act, which would create nationwide protections guaranteeing LGBT people are protected from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations, but so far, not a single Republican has endorsed it.

This Disturbing Video Exposes China's 'Electroshock' Gay 'Conversion' Methods

This Disturbing Video Exposes China's 'Electroshock' Gay 'Conversion' Methods

Beijing activist John Shen went undercover in an effort to expose the use of controversial “conversion” methods that promise to “cure” gay and lesbian people in China.

U.K. television network Channel 4 has produced a new documentary titled, “Unreported World,” which follows John, 22, and other members of China’s largest LGBT rights group, the Beijing LGBT Center, as they take viewers behind the scenes for a close-up look at a few of the outlandish, horrifying techniques — including electroshock therapy — used in clinics across the country. These “cures,” of course, have absolutely no basis in science

Still, the resulting footage is quite unsettling.

“Your current conditioned reflex is when you see the same sex, you feel love,” one medical professional at a clinic in Tianjin told Shen in the report. She went on to suggest drugs and electric shocks as methods for ridding one’s self of same-sex attraction. “Now what I want to make you feel is scared,” she said.

Another clinician is shown physically administering an electric shock treatment at a hospital outside of Beijing.

The report is particularly disconcerting given that it comes less than a year after a Chinese psychological clinic was ordered to pay 3,500 yuan ($560) to a gay man for administrating such treatments. The 30-year-old patient, Yang Teng, had taken the clinic to court for administering electric shocks and hypnosis with the aim of making him heterosexual. He’d voluntarily visited the clinic in 2014 after pressure from family members to marry and have a child, according to the Associated Press

The court ruled that such “conversion” treatments were illegal

China dropped homosexuality from its list of mental disorders in 2001. Still, the nation has no anti-discrimination legislation acknowledging the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in place, and same-sex marriage remains illegal

Tennessee Church Kicks Out Boy Scouts For Being Too Accepting

Tennessee Church Kicks Out Boy Scouts For Being Too Accepting

A Tennessee church that had supported a local Boy Scouts troop for more than 50 years asked the group to meet elsewhere after the national organization revised bylaws this summer to accept gay and lesbian adult leaders, USA Today reported Wednesday.

The church is the third in the state to sever ties with the Boy Scouts since they became accepting of out gay leaders, said Boy Scouts executive Larry Brown, who declined to name the other religious establishments in his interview with USA Today. Churches in other states have also decided to reject local troops.

Brown told the paper that the North Boulevard Church of Christ in Murfreesboro, Tenn.,  had given the matter “a great deal of thought” and “decided to drop their charter with the Boy Scouts of America and the Middle Tennessee Council,” an area consortium of troops.

He told the paper that the Church of Christ, which reported more than 1,700 members in 2014 has given the approximately 100 Boy Scouts members time to find a new meeting location.

“We are trying to find new sponsors that would be willing to sponsor their units,” Brown said in a phone interview with USA Today. “We have right at 600 churches and other groups like civic clubs that are charter partners with us. We have three out of 600 that have decided to leave.”

Brown told the paper that he hopes North Boulevard Church of Christ will reconsider its decision to sever ties.

“North Boulevard Church of Christ has been an outstanding partner with Boy Scouts Middle Tennessee Council for over 50 years, producing hundreds of great citizens and community leaders, and we welcome them to come back and partner with the Middle Tennessee Council at any time,” Brown told the paper.

Every leader in Boy Scouts has to sign a declaration of belief in God, he added.

Churches supporting Boy Scouts troops across the country have been supportive of the rule change. The Blackman United Methodist Church Council informed the Boy Scouts that they trusted its troop to make leadership decisions, USA Today reported.

Laura Bohling whose gay son is an Eagle Scout with a troop that meets at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints in the same county as the ousted troop told the paper that the Murfreesboro church had been accepting.

“I would say that I’m disappointed for a storied program like the one at North Boulevard Church of Christ for those kids not being able to continue,” Bohling told the paper. She said that in order to become a scout leader at her church, all a boy had to do was “be a person in good standing.”

The One Million Moms Outrage Test

The One Million Moms Outrage Test
One Million Moms, a media watch group arm of the American Family Association, has targeted this new Campbell’s soup commercial featuring a real-life pair of dads feeding soup to their son:

According to 1MM, the ad is “pushing the LGBT agenda” by “glorifying this unnatural marriage.” They are calling for a boycott if Campbell’s does not stop airing the ad. 1MM admonishes Campbell’s tactics. “Companies should advertise the quality of their products,” they state. “They should not be highlighting who is attracted to whom or who sleeps with whom.”

Would other commercials hold up under the same scrutiny? Let’s put some commercials to the One Million Moms Test to judge whether they (a) advertise the quality of their product, or (b) highlight who is attracted to whom or who sleeps with whom.

Look at this Campbell’s commercial from 1953:

It is evident that this commercial is (b) highlighting who is attracted to whom. Johnny is attracted to “the girl of his dreams” but decides he will “seek another bride.” But when the girl’s mother advises serving Campbell’s, Johnny returns and marries the girl! The blatant sexuality of this commercial is astonishing. How did they allow this to air back in the 1950s? There is a quick mention of the soup’s quality at the end, but the bulk of the commercial is pushing a soup-based, sexual agenda.

Is it just Campbell’s? Or are other soup commercials pushing a progressive, sexual-charged cause? Let’s take a look at Progresso. First of all, Progresso sounds like ‘progressive,’ which is most likely offensive to the 1MM group. If we take a look at their advertising, such as “The Proposal” from a few years ago, we can see that Progresso, too, is (b) highlighting sexual attraction and not advertising the quality of their product. In this commercial, a woman believes a man in her office wants to marry her because he has served her a bowl of Italian wedding soup. She believes the man wants her “to live in his arms forever” and her heart is audibly pounding. The woman is excited, some might say sexually aroused. Disgusting.

What about other popular commercials? Progressive has mounted a series of popular ads featuring the quirky Flo character. Let’s ignore the fact that the product is called “Progressive” and that Flo is obviously some sort of word play of menstrual flow. Instead, let’s examine other ways that the company is pushing a progressive agenda. In “Flo’s Family,” we are introduced to Flo’s parents and siblings. Yes, that’s right – parents and siblings! Do you realize what that means? Flo and her brother and sister are products of the sexual intimacy between her two parents! This advertisement is flaunting (b) who is attracted to whom! There is not even a mention of the quality of the product. And, to make matters worse, all of the characters are portrayed by the same actress! I don’t know what that means, but it seems unsettling. 1MM must agree that these portrayals should not be viewed by small children.

State Farm, another insurance company, has several questionable ads. Take the popular Road Trip commercial with the comic line “Six callers ahead of us, Jimmy.” This ad features a man, his son, and his mother. The mother had sex to produce the man, and the man had sex to produce the son. Pushing this sort of sexual agenda to sell insurance is downright loathsome. Or, how about the company’s “It’s Jake from State Farm” commercial? In it, a man is seen with his wife in the middle of the night (3:11 a,m. to be exact). A man and his wife?! This is (b) highlighting who is attracted to whom — the wife is even jealous of the phone call the husband is making! It has nothing to do with (a) the quality of the product.

Have you seen the new Burger King campaign for chicken fries, called Pregnant? In it, a chicken announces that she is pregnant with French Fries’ baby! Where do I begin?! This is definitely a case of (b) highlighting a chicken having sex with a potato, or bestiality. Or should we call it vegetablality? No matter what it is, there is no mention of the product’s quality. The ad is repugnant.

An ad like this is a flagrant and shameless plug for inappropriate sexuality. But there are other, more subtle ads that are equally damaging. Take Matthew McConaughey’s Lincoln commercial, I Just Liked It. On the surface, it appears that the commercial is (a) proving the quality of the product because of Mr. McConaughey’s endorsement. But you must read between the lines here. McConaughey’s statement that he has been driving a Lincoln, not because it was “cool” or to “make a statement,” but rather, because he “just liked it.” This is clearly promoting a homosexual agenda. We cannot go around doing things just because we “like” it. What kind of message is that? Perhaps if McConaughey had said that he did it because “that’s the way the Lord likes it according to the Bible,” then it would be more acceptable.

Thanks, 1MM for opening our eyes to the dangers of the advertising world.
