Here's Why Nicole Richie Is Your New Favorite Gay Icon

Here's Why Nicole Richie Is Your New Favorite Gay Icon

Anyone who is a fan of reality TV should know that Nicole Richie — alongside Paris Hilton — shaped much of today’s selfie-driven pop culture with her iconic series, “The Simple Life.”

Almost a decade later, we still can’t get enough of this star! Richie’s built herself quite a queer following with her show, “Candidly Nicole,” which functions as a unique hybrid of scripted and non-scripted campy humor.

“Nicole is beyond a gay icon, she just IS gay; not in the man-on-man action kind of way, but in the old school fly-your-freak flag, bleach-your-hair, snap-miss-thing kind of way!” Randy Barbato, the show’s co-executive producer, told The Huffington Post. “Nicole’s comic genius taps into an outsider rebel spirit that resonates with the GAYEST of gays.”

We absolutely love this show and the icon Richie has become in the world of reality TV. Check out a promo above from a “TOTALLY GAY” episode premiering tonight, Wednesday, Sept. 2nd at 11/10 p.m. CT on VH1.

Republican presidential candidates weigh in on Rowan County marriage license showdown

Republican presidential candidates weigh in on Rowan County marriage license showdown

Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina was not pleased when the US Supreme Court ruled in June that same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states.

But that doesn’t mean the only female candidate in the GOP field is supportive of Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis’ high-profile battle against issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

‘When you are a government employee as opposed to say, an employee of another kind of organization, then in essence, you are agreeing to act as an arm of the government,’ Fiorina said in a radio interview Tuesday (1 September).

Because of that, the former CEO of Hewlett Packard believes it might be time for Davis to look for employment elsewhere since she is being paid by the government to do a job and ‘needs to execute the government’s will.’

‘Given the role that she’s playing, given the fact that the government is paying her salary, I think that is not appropriate,’ Fiorina added. ‘ … I think it’s a very different situation for her than someone in a hospital who’s asked to perform an abortion or someone at a florist who’s asked to serve a gay wedding. I think when you’re a government employee, you are put into a different position honestly.’

Fellow presidential candidate, US Senator Lindsay Graham, also spoke to conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt and was more concise in his reading of the situation: ‘As a public official, comply with the law or resign.’

Graham, who himself is opposed to gay marriage, added: ‘I appreciate her conviction. I support traditional marriage, but she’s accepted a job where she has to apply the law to everyone, and that’s her choice.’

But Davis has found an ally in her fight in US Senator Rand Paul despite his belief that states should get out of the license business altogether.

‘I think people who do stand up and are making a stand to say that they believe in something is an important part of the American way,’ Paul recently told Boston Herald Radio.

He added: ‘I think one way to get around the whole idea of what the Supreme Court is forcing on the states is for states just to get out of the business of giving out licenses … then if you want a marriage contract you go to a church. And so I’ve often said we could have gotten around all of this also in the sense that I do believe everybody has a right to a contract.’

Judge Cancels Texas AG Ken Paxton’s Contempt Hearing Over Gay Marriage Resistance

Judge Cancels Texas AG Ken Paxton’s Contempt Hearing Over Gay Marriage Resistance

paxton

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will not face a contempt hearing for defying the U.S. Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling.

A federal judge on Wednesday canceled Paxton’s Sept. 10 contempt hearing over the state’s failure to issue an accurate death certificate to a gay widower for six weeks following the ruling. Paxton asked U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia to cancel the hearing last week, and attorneys for the widower, John Stone-Hoskins, agreed to the request.

U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia wrote that the state has fully complied with his order from last month to implement guidelines for recognizing same-sex marriages in issuing birth and death certificates, and to process all pending applications.

However, Garcia also noted that he’s received mailings from people alleging that some county clerks in Texas are still refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

“These incidents have not been properly filed and are not before this Court,” Garcia wrote. “Nonetheless, the Court understands … that the attorney general does not intend to represent any clerk facing litigation for its failure to issue marriage license to same-sex couples. The Court expects that Ken Paxton, as Texas Attorney General, and Kirk Cole, as interim Commissioner of the Department of State Health Services, will utilize their unique positions to ensure proper implementation of the law across the State of Texas. Ensuring full compliance with this Court’s July 7, 2015 final judgment and the Supreme Court’s Obergefell decision will preclude the need for this Court’s intervention and will allow Attorney General Paxton and Commissioner Cole to focus on other State affairs.”

In the wake of the high court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, Paxton issued a nonbonding opinion that essentially encouraged county clerks to defy the ruling, which he called “lawless.” Paxton’s opinion resulted in an ethics complaint being filed against him with the State Bar of Texas. Meanwhile, Paxton is also facing felony charges for alleged securities fraud.

A Message To Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis: 'Girl, Take Off That Romper'

A Message To Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis: 'Girl, Take Off That Romper'

Kentucky clerk Kim Davis has caused quite a stir recently among the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community for her refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples “under God’s authority.” Well, Jonathan Lovitz, vice president of external affairs at the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, has some words for Ms. Davis.

“Girl, take off that romper,” Lovitz joked.

But on a more serious note, he added, “When you’re an elected official, you’ve got to do what the job requires and keep your personal beliefs checked at the door. It’s what everyone else does. There are great members of Congress, state legislators, all over the country, who have devout personal beliefs but know that they have a constituency to serve first. And that’s what she has to do as well.”

Click on the clip below to learn more about Davis and what her duties as clerk (who reportedly racks in nearly $80,000 per year) actually entail.

Kentucky couple say it has been ‘devastating’ to be repeatedly turned away by Kim Davis

Kentucky couple say it has been ‘devastating’ to be repeatedly turned away by Kim Davis

Kentucky couple David Ermold and David Moore, together 17 years, want to get married in the county where they live.

But Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis and her religious opposition to same-sex marriage keeps standing in their way.

Davis, who has all but exhausted her legal options, told the couple she was refusing their request for a license on ‘God’s authority’ as the couple were refused a license for a third time after a tense confrontation Tuesday (1 September).

‘It’s devastating to me,’ Ermold tells MSNBC. ‘I don’t have the words to explain how disappointing it is.’

Things got personal during the exchange when Ermold told the four-times married Davis that he and Davis had been together for 17 years and asked pointedly: ‘What’s the longest you’ve been with someone?’

Ermhold doesn’t think he will return until after battle is settled.

‘I don’t know that I could handle another rejection,’ he says. ‘It seems to be getting worse and it’s escalating over time. The next time we go back, I really want it to be that we’re getting a marriage license. I was so disappointed (Tuesday). I thought we were going to walk out of there and be holding that license high in the air.’

Moore believes what Davis wants ‘is to be a martyr.

‘(She) can believe whatever she wants but it shouldn’t effect how she does her job.’

While Davis’ attorneys are asking that her religious convictions be accommodated, the couple believes what they are asking for is an accommodation to discriminate.

‘There’s a difference between the county clerk in an official capacity and Kim Davis as a person,’ Ermhold says. ‘When you walk through those doors and you take on that role, you have a responsibility to the people of your county.’

Davis and her deputies have been ordered to appear in federal court on Thursday (3 September) to explain why they have not began issuing marriage licenses. The US Supreme Court denied her request this week for more time as she battles a ruling against her in an appellate court.

Here’s Why Eddie Redmayne Was Cast In The Danish Girl Instead Of A Trans Actor

Here’s Why Eddie Redmayne Was Cast In The Danish Girl Instead Of A Trans Actor

1225086_The-Danish-Girl-poster-croppedEddie was really the person I wanted to make the film with, and I was very passionate about that. I think also there’s a certain gender fluidity that I sensed in him, that I found intriguing and it led me to think he might be a really interesting person to cast in this role. I felt that there was something in him that was drawn to the feminine. That was something that I felt he might be interested to explore further. I think there’s a tremendous pool of talented trans actors out there, and I think there’s probably a journey to go on to make sure that talented trans actors have the same access to opportunities both in front of and behind the character as cisgendered actors. I hope we’re at the beginning of a revolution that will improve access for trans actors and trans filmmakers — but there’s a long way to go.”
