Three homes to bring you up close and personal with Camden, London’s quirkiest quarter

London’s Camden Town is made up of an eclectic mix of subcultures, making the district one of the quirkiest and most intriguing places the capital has to offer.

Amy Winehouse’s career started in Camden, and the Roundhouse saw many an upcoming (or already famous) artist or band, including the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie; to this day, the Roundhouse hosts an exciting mix of concerts, theatre and other live events.

A number of rock legends, from the Rolling Stones to David Bowie, have played the Roundhouse stage.

A plethora of shops, catering to all tastes from punk to hippie, from the eccentric to the less so, line the streets; every day, the world-famous markets attract locals and tourists who very often also decide to pop into Word on the Water, London’s famous floating bookshop.

Since July, Words on the Water has a new permanent home in neighboring King's Cross.

Browsing the stalls, they all have one thing in common: everyone is on the hunt for a special souvenir, vintage fashion or exotic food, all of which Camden has an abundance of. While in town, don’t forget to pop by Cyberdog to get an idea of what’s on trend in futuristic fashion.

Winter or summer, the markets are always crowded with tourists and locals.

Camden’s appeal is completed by a lively and diverse bar scene – whether you prefer Scottish import BrewDog, the laid-back Lock Tavern or dive headfirst into the Rockabilly scene at The Elephant’s Head, we’re sure you’ll find something.

Living in Camden means living amongst an international community of people from all walks of life, but its increasing popularity sees house prices on a steady rise – so if you’re looking at Camden as a possible new home, keep your eyes open.

This one bedroom apartment in neighboring Primrose Hill is one of the best spots to start getting acquainted with Camden: although the quietly-located property is technically outside the district, its lively streets are just a short walk away.

Located on the garden level of an end of terrace property, the flat comes with a share of the freehold.

Just a short walk across, near Regent’s Park, lies Solstice Point, one of Camden’s most dynamic new developments, where a two bedroom house has become available.

Its façade, made of solar collectors, made headlines earlier this year; sustainable living is a key aspect of this energetic and modern development.

Gay Couple Denied Marriage License AGAIN: “These People Are Cruel”

Screen Shot 2015-08-14 at 10.10.50 AMLast month, a gay couple seeking a marriage license in Kentucky’s Rowan County went up against Christian soldier/county clerk Kim Davis. It didn’t go so well.

“It was something I had prayed and fasted over,” Davis said later under oath. “It wasn’t a spur of the moment decision.”

David Vincent Moore and his fiancé returned this month with the knowledge that U.S. District Judge David Bunning wrote that Davis “is refusing to recognize the legal force of U.S. Supreme Court jurisprudence in performing her duties” and her “religious convictions cannot excuse her from performing the duties that she took an oath to perform as Rowan County Clerk.”

Davis was absent when they returned — the official story is she’s on vacation. But that didn’t stop her from blocking the couple as they again attempted to exercise their legal rights.

A deputy clerk can be heard citing Davis’ decision to go against the federal judge’s order, and in the end they’re met with that dreaded line “there’s nothing that can be done.”

“People are cruel, and this is wrong, and that’s how it is,” Moore says to news cameras before exiting the building.

stonewall

It was only a matter of time before a parody of the Stonewall trailer controversy made its way online.

Zeroing in on the perceived whitewashing and ciswashing of the historic gay rights event, this alternative trailer pulls no punches and aims to group Stonewall with director Roland Emmerich’s other “cinematic disasters” such as Independence Day and 2012.

How Performing Topless Made Tig Notaro Feel Empowered

How Performing Topless Made Tig Notaro Feel Empowered

After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, comedian Tig Notaro underwent a double mastectomy. The procedure left her “in a bad place” — “physically and emotionally beat,” she said, during a HuffPost Live conversation Wednesday. Then the comedian thought of a way to incorporate her new body into her act.

“This idea started to creep into my head of, ‘Oh gosh, what if I took my shirt off on onstage?'” she said. “It really amused me.”

Notaro, who opted against reconstructive surgery, tried out the move during one of her regular shows at The Largo comedy club in Los Angeles, and “the crowd just lost their mind.” From there, she decided to repeat it at performances in both New York and Boston, the latter of which is featured in her upcoming HBO comedy special “Boyish Girl Interrupted,” premiering Aug. 22.

“I feel very empowered and excited by it,” she said of her “topless comedy show.” “I love not acknowledging that my shirt is off. Once I take it off, I don’t ever talk about it again, and it leaves the audience kind of [like], ‘Wait a minute, is she going to mention that her shirt is off?’ And I don’t.”

The reaction to her shirtless routine gave Notaro “so much joy” during an otherwise fragile time, she told HuffPost Live.

“I feel excited while I’m doing it,” she said. “But I’m aware. I’m like, ‘Tig, your shirt’s off.”

You have to see this parody of the Stonewall trailer

You have to see this parody of the Stonewall trailer

If you haven’t noticed, there’s been a bit of a backlash against the new Stonewall trailer.

Celebrities and politicians have spoken out about the ‘whitewashing’ that appears to put more focus on a fictional white gay man than the actual heroes of the riots.

This includes Matilda star Mara Wilson and people who were actually there like Irene Monroe and Miss Major.

So it was only a matter of time before someone would make a parody version of the trailer, and it’s pretty hilarious.

With Independence Day’s Roland Emmerich directing the film, it calls Stonewall his ‘next big cinematic disaster’.

Richard Blanco

Secretary of State John Kerry is in Havana today to speak at the re-opening ceremony for the U.S. Embassy in Cuba. He is joined by openly gay poet Richard Blanco, who was asked by the Department of State to compose a new poem for the occasion, “Matters of the Sea” or ” “Cosas Del Mar.”

Blanco, who is the son of a Cuban exile family, told MSNBC this week that the poem was one of the most emotional and complex poems he’d written:

It seems like so much of what all my writing has been about leading up to this very moment, the negotiation of cultural identities. This just seems so surreal still…This is really in some sense just the beginning, the dawn of new things to come…I’ve always felt like my heart has been split between two countries, two heritages, two loyalties. And so the poem is in a way reconciling that part of me, personally. What I hope the poem does as well is bring us to another place of reconciliation, an emotional place of reconciliation…I see this as a moment of emotional truce.”

Blanco also recently spoke to NPR about his thoughts on Cuba’s relations with the LGBT community.

You know, in all my trips to Cuba, I’ve always gone to visit with family. And so I’m sort of a little outside of the loop of some of those things because I’m just hanging out with my family, living with them. So the LGBT community was something that I actually had very misunderstood for most of my trips. I just didn’t think there was even any kind of LGBT community to be had. But I think there has been a little bit more movement in that direction. However, in general, Latin American countries’ sense of homosexuality is very different than the United States or – you know, the sense of homophobia is not a religious-based sort of homophobia but one about machismo…

Watch Blanco read his poem below starts at [54:20]:

In 2013, Blanco was chosen to compose a poem at President Obama’s second inauguration.
