Right-Wing Talk Show Host Asks San Diego Pride, “Which Bigot Said It?” Oh, But There’s A Twist.

Right-Wing Talk Show Host Asks San Diego Pride, “Which Bigot Said It?” Oh, But There’s A Twist.

Screen Shot 2015-07-22 at 12.17.53 PMThis weekend, talk show host Mike Slater descended upon San Diego Pride with a condescending smirk, riotous “fitted” pink shirt, and only slightly trembling microphone to grille revelers and play a little game he likes to call “Which Bigot Said It?”

Displaying photos of Donald Trump, Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee, and Sarah Palin on a whiteboard, Slater rattled off a series of searing soundbites, including:

“I think marriage is as a marriage has always been — between a man and a woman.”

“For me as a Christian, it is also a sacred union. God’s in the mix.”

“Marriage has got historic, religious and moral content that goes back to the beginning of time.”

“I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage.”

Oh, but there’s a “Gotcha!” here.  A major “Gotcha!” Perhaps even a slightly obvious “Gotcha!” Okay, perhaps an entirely predictable “Gotcha!”

All these quotes, you see, can be attributed to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Oh, that sly fox.

Slater also goosed his subjects by asking, “What percentage of the male population are gay?” Answers pegged much higher than the statistic that coy little minx had under his belt: The Center for Disease Control claims that “1.8% of males are gay.”

Gotcha?

The whole ruse was hatched for Glenn Beck’s flamingly right-wing website The Blaze. which has recently published such articles as “Yes, Gay Marriage Hurts Me Personally” and “Franklin Graham’s Dire Warning in Wake of Same-Sex Marriage Ruling.”

We predict less than 1.8% of gay males will enjoy the flaccid segment, which you can watch below:

The Perfect NYC Weekend: Go Out, Have Fun

The Perfect NYC Weekend: Go Out, Have Fun

Conrad Hilton NY

New York City is truly one of the world’s most prominent destinations, and boasts a vibrant scene bustling with busy theaters, art museums and galleries, decadent restaurants, shopping, parks and other distinct experiences that visitors and locals alike may revel in all hours of the night. Entertainment aside, The City is also known for its place in history, including being the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement – making it a global center for the LGBT community. With summer officially in full swing it is the perfect time to take in all the sights and sounds that New York City has to offer, and there is no better place to call “home base” than the contemporary Conrad New York.

Located downtown in lively Battery Park City, the Conrad New York is flanked by lower Manhattan’s financial district, as well as the trendy and fashionable Tribeca and SoHo neighborhoods. It is also a quick walk from several subway stations, and is easily accessible to the rest of the city.

With endless possibilities for exploration and inspiration, we’ve pieced together the perfect weekend itinerary. Discover our tips on dining, nightlife, and everything else there is to uncover in The Big Apple below:

EAT

AtrioBegin your experience at Conrad’s own ATRIO Wine Bar and Restaurant, which offers Mediterranean fare including inventive flatbreads, roasted seasonal vegetables, unique meatballs, salads, artisanal cheeses and cured meats. There is plenty here to whet your palette. If you’re in the mood for a midday cocktail, head on up to the hotel’s Loopy Doopy Rooftop Bar (pictured at top) and take in the stunning views of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty while enjoying the bar’s signature “Prosecco and Icepop.”

For a more laid-back scene, head to the West Village’s Riviera Cafe. People-watch on the outdoor patio and be sure to try their salmon burrito. Fast food aficionados will want to swing through Greenwich Village’s Sticky’s Finger Joint, The City’s first variety gourmet chicken finger restaurant. Chicken poppers and sandwiches reach new heights here, and are accented by a bevy of house-made sauces. For a more polished experience, head to Gramercy Park and visit Novitá. Sensible and delicious Italian dining has been served here since 1994, and favorites like the funghi misti, the spigola con carciofi, and the house biscotti are not to be missed.

GO OUT

n-LOVEGUN-large570New York City’s nightlife is one that’s hard to beat. There are many bars, lounges and clubs where you can enjoy craft beers and ingenious cocktails all while listening to energetic beats spun by the finest DJs. In the East Village, Eastern Bloc channels cold war-era communist chic with Soviet-style posters and murals. For a more upright night out, travel to nearby Nowhere Bar, where theme nights draw a fun mixed crowd.

Heading west to Chelsea, G Lounge serves up a modern, bright and unpretentious atmosphere highlighted with vibrant dancers and pulsating music. GYM Bar is perfect for sports fans and offers many screens to watch the big game, a pool table, and a basement lounge perfect for when the bar gets busy. Barracuda is a Chelsea staple with friendly bartenders, drag shows, and an all-around casual vibe.

For the more adventurous, The Eagle is known for its beer blasts and summertime rooftop barbecues. On Christopher Street, visit local favorite Rockbar. With a queer “rock and roll” theme, the bar offers guests a busy calendar of events filled with live bands.

Once you’ve made it to the West Village, make a pilgrimage to the historic Stonewall Inn –the epicenter of the 1969 Stonewall riots. Then head to Julius, the city’s oldest gay bar, to toast to how far we’ve come. If you’re looking to “rouge your knees and roll your stockings down,” you’ll enjoy the musically-oriented crowd at Marie’s Crisis Cafe.

Cubby Hole, though a fully LGBT bar, is more popular with its lesbian clientele. Draught beers and fun eclectic decor make this spot memorable and unconventional. Atlas Social Club, on the other hand, piques male interest. Modeled on an old athletic club, bartenders serve strong drinks at this spot in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen.

Across the bridge in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is the stylish new multi-level gay club, LoveGun. The club bills itself as a local haunt on weekdays and a destination spot on weekends.

EXPLORE

The High Line

Art lovers will appreciate The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art. With over 24,000 works of art, the collection of historically significant and often racy art exploring the LGBTQ experience is worthy of praise. The Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market, located in New York’s latest “gayborhood,” offers all sorts of eclectic things you could hope to discover: from antiques and collectibles, vintage clothing, furniture, to jewelry on sale. For more current looks, head to Dover Street Market. This little known mini-department store presents a wide range of items from both local and world-renowned designers.

Broaden your cinematic horizons at Manhattan’s Film Forum. Innovative new works and classic films come to life at this mini movie-plex that has become popular with cinephiles in the city. Word of caution: talk or text at your own risk.

Get outdoors and enjoy the scenic views along the Hudson River Greenway bike path that stretches from Battery Park to Dyckman Street. Then check out the famous High Line, the elevated section of abandoned railroad tracks that have been transformed into an urban park. It has been a fan favorite since its inception in 2009, and extended to W 34th Street just last year.

UKIP at Pride in London: What really happened?

UKIP at Pride in London: What really happened?

Pride in London bosses say they will not resign for allowing UKIP to march in this year’s parade.

The presence of the LGBTQ group of the UK Independence Party, whose politicians have been widely accused of homophobia and racism, sparked weeks of controversy in the lead up to Pride day on 27 June.

They were first slated to participate, then banned, then on the day took part anyway.

Some LGBTI activists have signed an open letter suggesting Pride in London always wanted to sneak in the UKIP group, then went on TV to boast they had done so. They want board members, including chair Michael Salter, to resign.

Pride directors say LGBTQ UKIP forced its way into the march. Amid higher security after the Tunisia terrorist attack the day before, and on a hot day with the march delayed, they decided the safest option was to move them to a slightly different part of the parade but let them continue.

The open letter was co-authored by CN Lester and Jacq Applebee. Here we publish its claims and the Pride in London board’s response.

They say: UKIP was initially given permission to march, even though they didn’t sign the Pride in London charter everyone had to sign to enter the parade.

Pride says: The parade is open for application by any group or individual. Participants are not required to sign up to the Pride In London Pledge for politicians.

They say: Pride didn’t tell its own community advisory board or its black and minority ethnic representative it had accepted UKIP’s application to march. They refused to discuss UKIP’s inclusion.

Pride says: The directors admit they didn’t tell the advisory board UKIP was on the list of participants, as they don’t usually discuss the list with the board. But when the issue arose, they did seek advice from the CAB and listen to the community.

They say: Pride in London responded to community anger about UKIP taking part by banning them, assuring people they wouldn’t march.

Pride says: ‘We excluded UKIP from the parade out of concern for the safety of our volunteers. We faced equal levels of criticism from other parts of the community on free speech grounds following the decision to remove UKIP.’

They say: On Pride day, UKIP were ‘ushered into the march’ despite refusing to pay the entry fee, sign the charter or sign the agreement on good conduct. Security and stewards removed other groups who broke these rules, but not UKIP.

Pride says: ‘It is correct UKIP had not paid their parade fee by the deadline’. Pride agrees the party didn’t ‘meet the standards of the code of conduct for parade entrants’. On the day UKIP ‘broke into the parade’. Due to safety concerns, organizers decided ‘not to eject them but relocate the group in a less provocative position and ensure that the parade could continue’.

They say: The chair of Pride in London, Michael Salter, told the BBC Daily Politics show the organizers had ‘managed to get them [UKIP] safely into the parade’ and it was ‘great that they [UKIP] were able to participate’. This, they say, confirms the organizers deliberately put them in the parade.

Pride says: Pride in London did not ‘invite’ UKIP to take part and the party had promised not to but broke that promise on the day. Michael Salter was merely saying he was happy he was able to manage the parade safely despite UKIP’s actions.

They say: The Pride board have been silent about the ‘backtracking’.

Pride says: The board produced a report and wants the independent Community Advisory Board to provide advice on possible revised criteria for participation in Pride. It also wants to discuss the rules with the ‘wider community’.

Gay Star News has invited UKIP to comment and is awaiting a response.

Full disclosure: GSN is a media partner of Pride in London but undertakes to report fairly and impartially on it.

“B*tch, I’m A Condom” Madonna Parody Wants You To Practice Safe Sex

OK, we have a confession. We’ve seen just about every Madonna parody out there. All 250,000 of them. But this latest one takes the cake.

Impulse Los Angeles, a group dedicated to promoting safe sex among gay men, just released their own version of our icon’s latest single “Bitch, I’m Madonna” and they’ve pulled out all the stops.

Related: Madonna’s New Party Hardy Video: “Epic” Or “Just Plain Sad”?

The colorful video is called “Bitch, I’m A Condom.” It is appropriately set in a West Hollywood gym and features cameo appearances by RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Pandora Boxx and Manila Luzon, as well as a hot, half-naked man dressed as a rubber.

“Impulse United is proud to produce their first ever Safer Sex Parody!” the group said in a statement. “There is nothing funny about the risks of HIV, but together we can educate & protect ourselves from STIs.”

Check out the video below. And have a happy hump day!

College Fires Homophobic Professor Who Wants To Hang Queers Because the Rainbow Flag

College Fires Homophobic Professor Who Wants To Hang Queers Because the Rainbow Flag

rick-coupland

Yesterday, we told you about a professor at St. Lawrence College in Ontario who, angry over a news article on the flying of the rainbow flag in St. Petersburg, Florida to mark Pride, wrote on Facebook, “It’s the queers they should be hanging, not the flag…”

The professor in question, Rick Coupland, was brought in for questioning about the post by St. Lawrence College. Coupland then wrote on Facebook,

“I have to go off Facebook for awhile. I’ve been called into work and told to bring a representative re: my comments on FB. Please pray for me and my job…”

St. Lawrence College has now announced on Twitter that Coupland has been fired.

1 of 2: As a result of complaints about comments made on social media that were brought forward to the College,

2 of 2: this matter was investigated internally. Mr. Coupland is no longer an employee at St. Lawrence College.

Coupland is a member of the Association of Covenant People, a group that believes in “the lineal descent of Anglo-Celto-Saxondom from the Twelve Tribes of Israel.”
