#31Reasons: Denied Shifts After His Boyfriend Stopped by His Place of Work

Luke Peterson has testified three times before lawmakers in Nebraska’s state legislature about the need for a state non-discrimination law — once for each of the times he believes he’s lost a job because of his sexual orientation.

This Handy Infographic Lists The Country’s 25 Most Handsome Cities

Thinking about moving to another city? Before you do, be sure to check out this handy new infographic from the folks over at GroomingLounge.com.

The website, which bills itself as “the nation’s premier resource for men’s grooming,” recently did a little research to figure out which cities in America are the “most handsome” using the following criteria: amount spent on personal care services per man, spend on personal care products per man, spend on shaving needs per man, spend on apparel per man and the fittest cities in the nation (based on a report from the American Fitness Index).

“While handsomeness may be subjective,” the website says, “the criteria in this survey measure the men in each city’s commitment to appearance.”

So which is the “most handsome” city of them all? Researchers found that the guys in Seattle spent the most money on personal care items annually (approximately $3,413). They also spent the most on shaving needs and the second most on services and apparel. San Francisco came in at a close second followed by Washington, D.C. in third.

Which other metropolitans made the cut? Check out the infographic below to see…

Houston Mayoral Candidate With History Of Anti-Gay Votes Tries To Buy LGBT Group’s Endorsement

Houston Mayoral Candidate With History Of Anti-Gay Votes Tries To Buy LGBT Group’s Endorsement

Screen Shot 2015-07-24 at 9.52.11 AM

With out lesbian Houston Mayor Annise Parker term-limited, candidates to replace her are vigorously seeking the backing of the city’s main LGBT group.

One candidate, state Rep. Sylvester Turner (shown above in last month’s Pride parade), even spent $3,040 to purchase at least 76 memberships in the Houston GLBT Political Caucus to try to win the group’s endorsement.

The Houston Chronicle reports:

Caucus President Maverick Welsh, however, said the campaigns’ efforts will not be enough to tip the scales.

“We know campaigns actively try to push as many people into the room as possible, and that’s why we’ve strategically tried to grow our membership over the last year and a half,” Welsh said. “I don’t think any candidate has enough members to be able to buy an endorsement.” …

“It’s kind of nice to be in the position of being the belle of the ball for once,” he said.

Project Q Houston notes that Turner’s decision to purchase memberships is particularly interesting given that he’s cast some anti-gay votes as a member of the Texas Legislature. He voted in favor of banning same-sex marriage in 2003. He also voted to ban gay foster parents in 2005:

Turner claims he’s since evolved on LGBT issues, but critics say his shift is politically motivated. Turner was dogged by gay rumors in the 1991 mayor’s race, but his spokeswoman, Sue Davis, said she doesn’t expect them to come up again:

“Twenty-three years ago, starting rumors that your opponent was gay was a time-honored political tactic,” Davis said in an email. “Times have changed. Politics is as rough as it always was – but for candidates, gay-baiting invariably backfires.”

The Houston Press detailed the gay rumors about Turner in a story in 1994 by reporter Wayne Dolcefino. Turner was apparently living with a man whom he had represented in an estate case involving another man who faked his death:

In addition to the suggestion that Turner had been involved in something crooked, the Channel 13 report, by its references to a “male model” and “hairdresser” and its film of the man Turner supposedly was sharing a house with, left viewers with another impression: that Turner might be gay. …

Dolcefino, in parts of his deposition cited by his lawyers, says that while working on the scam story he met with [private investigator Bill] Elliott in the parking lot of the Allen Park Inn, where he was shown a copy of a statement the investigator had taken from Cheryl Turner in which she professed to have recorded “graphic, sexually related phone conversations” between Turner and other men and identified “certain individuals with whom Mr. Turner was allegedly having homosexual relations….”

Regardless of the gay rumors, another candidate says Turner’s voting history demonstrates a lack of consistency on LGBT issues. Former Congressman Chris Bell voted against a federal marriage amendment in 2004 and received a 100 percent score from the Human Rights Campaign. From The Texas Observer:

“I think many Americans, if not most Americans, have evolved over the last 10 years on LGBT issues, and I include myself in that group, along with President Barack Obama, along with Hillary Clinton and so many others,” Turner said. “People evolve, and I think that’s what we want people to do.” …

“I think many of us evolved on the issue of marriage equality,” said Bell, a one-time board member for Equality Texas. “There are certain issues that weren’t marriage equality that were just basically trying to address outright discrimination, and that’s a course of a different color.”

What's It Like To Come Out On Reality TV?

What's It Like To Come Out On Reality TV?

Faith didn’t expect to come out on a dating competition, or maybe even at all.

Her eyes swell up with fear when “Everlasting” producer Rachel asks if she has feelings for her best friend Amy during her home date in Mississippi. Faith sees the statement as something far more potent than the reality TV admission Rachel hopes will make a juicy scene in the show’s next episode. For Faith, even thinking about being gay is a confession to God himself.

“I love Amy,” she finally says, a grin spreading across her face. She’s overwhelmed with relief, momentarily removed from the possible impact of coming out again that night for the cameras.

It’s a poignant moment in “Truth,” Episode 5 of the premiere season of “UnREAL” — a powerful reminder that, even as marriage equality is approved by the Supreme Court, and general acceptance skyrockets beyond bigotry’s grasp, coming out can still be a daunting experience. The Huffington Post spoke to actor Breeda Wool about playing the character of Faith, her powerful scene in “Truth” and the importance of LGBT narratives on TV.

How did you get the part of Faith? What was the audition process like?

My audition scene was the scene in the pilot where the Shia says, “Okay, we want you to talk about being a virgin.” So, the scene was that moment where I realized that I was going to have to admit I was a virgin on camera. [I realized] that everyone — my family, my grandmother, my community — would see this moment where I’m exposing my sexual past.

I really identified with the role. The idea of having secrets and not being about to control your exposure was exciting. I knew there would be a lot I’d get to play with.

What did you know about the character going in? Did you know Faith was gay

I had a lot of suspicions. I talked to [co-creator] Sarah Gertrude Shapiro after the audition. The character was originally quite masculine. That masculinity was transformed into a sort of awkwardness, but originally, I was in a male world, more comfortable with a masculine presence, than, you know, wearing heels and a sweeping gown.

What was your experience of navigating Faith’s coming out in “Truth”? How did you think about that scene in terms of its impact on audiences of “UnREAL”?

Well, I knew that my arc was something that a lot of people go through. So, I had a mission to identify with and express it as truthfully as I could. I knew that if I made myself into a caricature or played with any personal judgement of any kind that I would be doing a disservice to people all around the country. I felt from the start that I needed to tell that story poignantly and honestly.

Reality TV can be exploitative and “UnREAL” has been quite condemning of that, but for Faith, at least on a personal level, it seems the experience has been largely positive.

Yeah, I’m the one character that really gets a lot out of being on the show. Well, so far! We have to watch some more episodes. But I have this wonderful opportunity where I get to be exposed freely and it opens up this whole new door. I mean, in the story God can see my thoughts. I’ve lived an entire life where even my thoughts of love toward Amy are unholy. So, just an admittance and acceptance that God could still love me is a massive theological revelation.

There’s a cynical undercurrent to the question of her publicly coming out, though. We experience Faith’s relief, but it’s still unclear if she will ever be able to tell her community.

There is really a question of whether I will go back to my community. You know, will they accept me? Can I teach about acceptance and understanding? There’s so much in the Bible that you could choose to follow dogmatically. The issue of homosexuality is actually chosen by Faith’s community. It’s not actually decided by the Bible; it’s an interpretation of the Bible. There’s so much other stuff that communities choose to neglect or leave out while highlighting what’s best. When I was shooting it felt like the hopes and dreams of her future versus the reality of the situation coming to a crossroads. It was really tragic.

Now that the episode has aired, what kind of reactions have you been getting?

I’ve been getting a lot of really positive feedback! I think as an actor, the best you can do is get people to believe. The best feedback you can get is that people relate to the story that you made. I worked really hard and I feel like people identify with Faith’s story, whether they have that particular personal experience in their life or not.

An even greater goal for me is to have people be able to identify with that story when it’s not their story at all. You know, it’s important for people who might have opinions about [being gay] or parameters about love just watching somebody coming from a place where they came come out, where their culture won’t accept them. To have people identify with that from all walks of life is something that I was going for. As an actor, it’s a great accomplishment.

It’s important to have nuanced gay characters on TV. How do you think Faith’s fits into the rise of LGBT representation?

I completely agree. I feel like the biggest story is somebody making decisions in their life, deciding what is best for them and what is truthful to them as opposed to what their parents or their church or their culture is telling them they should do. I think that’s a universal story. What Faith feels she should do is not necessarily authentic, true and real to who she is as person. She learns to accept that and that’s a story I really wanted to help tell.

Let Ian McKellen show you the best way to make scrambled eggs

Ian McKellen is pretty damn talented. He can act anything from Shakespeare to superheroes, recite Taylor Swift lyrics and design Gandalf-themed limited edition Gay Star News tote bags.

But he has proved himself once again by sharing the recipe for what he claims are the world’s best scrambled eggs.

‘These scrambled eggs are the best in the world… it’s a family recipe, it comes from my stepmother Gladys,’ Sir Ian explains.

Not only does he show you everything, from the eggs, milk, butter and seasoning, he also has his opinions on toast.

‘Never wrap up toast,’ he orders. ‘Or the water vapor will stay inside and the toast will become limp.’

Can we have brunch round yours, Sir Ian?

Mr Holmes is out in cinemas worldwide now.

“Live from Chateau Marmont in Hollywood,” I scramble up the best eggs in the world for my Facebook followers, to celebrate the success of my new film “Mr. Holmes”.

Rush Limbaugh: ‘Loving, Sensitive’ Gay Sex on TV Causing Teen Boys to Be Less Sexually Active – LISTEN

Rush Limbaugh: ‘Loving, Sensitive’ Gay Sex on TV Causing Teen Boys to Be Less Sexually Active – LISTEN

Rush Limbaugh

Why are teen boys in the U.S. having less sex?

Because gay sex is portrayed as sensitive and loving, says Rush Limbaugh.

The radio host was referring to a report which showed that the percentage of teens who reported they had sex at least once has dropped significantly since the 1980s.

On his radio show, Limbaugh says that although 30 years ago a fall in the number of teens having sex would have been seen as a good thing, in 2015 it’s a problem because we “have turned boys into…bullies…predators…or pajama boys.”

He goes on to argue that while heterosexual porn is portrayed as violent and aggressive towards women, gay sex is seen as “loving, sensitive, fun, hip, natural normal [and] cool.”

He concludes that confused teens will therefore choose to become gay because the “lifestyle” is constantly pushed at them.

Earlier this year, Limbaugh said that same-sex marriage causes incest.
