BBC Question Time: Government Minister Sam Gyimah ‘Deeply Uncomfortable’ With Donald Trump State Visit
A Government minster has said he would be “deeply uncomfortable” about a Donald Trump state visit amid reports a ‘working visit’ by the US President had been dropped.

On BBC’s Question Time, Justice Minister Sam Gyimah said the US President would be “divisive at a time when we are trying to unite our country”, making him the first Tory frontbencher to make clear opposition to Trump’s proposed trip.

His comments came as the Daily Telegraph reported US diplomats have ditched plans for Trump to conduct a visit in January.

The idea was for Trump to formally open America’s new London embassy in a scaled-down visit that would have meant no meeting with the Queen.

The ‘special relationship’ between the two countries is under strain after the president hit back at the PM, who criticised him for retweeting propaganda from far-right extremist group Britain First.

In the House of Commons on Thursday, MPs from across the political spectrum  urged Theresa May to rescind the UK’s invitation.

Labour MP Stephen Doughty accused Trump of being “racist, incompetent, unthinking, or all three” and, on the Conservative benches, Reddich MP Rachel Maclean said MPs were “all disgusted” by Trump’s actions.

But Gyimah’s comments appeared to up the ante considering his position in May’s Government.

He said:

“What Donald Trump did recently, I think has definitely crossed a line. And it takes great bravery to stand up to your enemies. It takes even more bravery to stand up to your friends. “And I think Theresa May was right to rebuke him on Twitter for his comments, in his retweets of Britain First. We are a tolerant and decent country. We are open. And I think it’s right that she did that. “In terms of whether or not Donald Trump comes to this country, I am personally deeply uncomfortable about it. I am deeply uncomfortable because he is deliberately divisive, and this would be divisive at a time that we are trying to unite our country. “The invitation has been sent, it has been accepted. It’s above my pay grade in terms of what happens next, but I think I am deeply uncomfortable about it.”

The Kentucky Baptist Convention has threatened to kick out any member churches which intend to relax rules against hiring LGBT people.

Via it’s Illumination Project committee, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF), an affiliated group of liberal churches, has discussed the possibility of lifting the ban on hiring gay people.

However, according to the Courier Journal the Kentucky Baptist Convention has said it is “watching the situation closely.”

Paul Chitwood (right), executive director of the Kentucky Baptist Convention, said that if the fellowship’s leaders soften their rule against hiring “practicing homosexuals,” it would be “redefining sin.”

To add to the concerns of both the Kentucky Baptist Convention, there also rumblings of dissent within and regarding the CBF.

Maurice “Bojangles” Blanchard, who leads an LGBT ministry at Highland Baptist Church, criticized the CBF when it offered prayers for the victims of the shooting at Pulse nightclub. Blanchard, was one of the Kentucky plaintiffs in the Supreme Court case legalizing marriage equality, said it was hypocritical in light of the ban on LGBT employees.

He has also criticized the Illumination Project for not including any LGBT people. “They’re discussing our inclusion without including us,” he said.

The Illumination Project committee is expected to return with recommendations for changes early next year.

DUP Threatens To Pull Support For Conservative Government Over Irish Border Deal

DUP Threatens To Pull Support For Conservative Government Over Irish Border Deal
The Democratic Unionist Party has warned it may withdraw its support for Theresa May’s government if Northern Ireland is treated as a separate customs and trading regime after Brexit.

DUP MP Sammy Wilson suggested any attempt to “placate Dublin and the EU” over the Irish border could mean its ten MPs no longer prop up the Tories at Westminster.

The party ratcheted up the pressure on Thursday amid attempts to avoid a deadlock over a potential “hard border” between the north and south of Ireland.

Reports had suggested the government was preparing to agree that trading relations in some areas, such as agriculture and energy, would remain harmonised between Northern Ireland and the EU after quitting the EU.

The border between EU-member Ireland and the British region of Northern Ireland will be the UK’s only land frontier with the bloc after Brexit, and Dublin fears a hard border could disrupt 20 years of delicate peace in Northern Ireland.

But the DUP could have created another hurdle before Brexit talks can move to negotiations on Britain’s future trade relationship with the EU and a possible two-year Brexit transition deal.

Wilson said in an interview with the BBC:

“If there is any hint that in order to placate Dublin and the EU, they’re prepared to have Northern Ireland treated differently than the rest of the UK, then they can’t rely on our vote. “They have to recognise that if this is about treating Northern Ireland differently, or leaving us half in the EU, dragging along behind regulations which change in Dublin, it’s not on.”
DUP MP Ian Paisley urged the Republic of Ireland to take a more “mature” approach to Brexit.

“If the Republic of Ireland is going to keep shouting at our border and telling us that it is all doom and gloom and we are not going to get a proper relationship, that interferes in the negotiation process,” he told RTE.

“All of us, every constituent part, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, are leaving the EU. Don’t undermine our position and our sovereign integrity.”

Ireland has called on Britain to provide details of how it will ensure there is no “regulatory divergence” after Brexit that would require physical border infrastructure.

Ireland Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said on Thursday: “We are looking for significantly more clarity than we currently have from the British negotiating team.

“Hopefully we will make progress that will allow us to move on to Phase 2 in the middle of December. If it is not possible to do that, so be it.”

The Department for Exiting the EU (DExEU) refused to comment on a report in The Times that British negotiators had put forward a proposal to devolve powers to Northern Ireland to enable “customs convergence” with the Republic in areas such as agriculture and energy in an attempt to break the deadlock.

The paper quoted sources in Dublin as saying there had been “movement” on the issue and confidence was growing that agreement could be reached in time for next month’s summit in Brussels.

Theresa May is desperately hoping EU leaders will give the go-ahead for the second phase of the negotiations – including talks on a free trade deal – to begin at the European Council summit on December 14-15.

She is due to travel to Brussels on Monday for talks with European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker in the hope of securing a declaration that “sufficient progress” has been made on divorce issues like the financial settlement and the Irish border.

The leaders of the remaining 27 EU states, including Irish premier Leo Varadkar, have a veto on triggering the second phase of talks, meaning May must be sure of support from Dublin for progress to be made.

Senate GOP tax bill is an attack on low income and LGBTQ Americans

Senate GOP tax bill is an attack on low income and LGBTQ Americans

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today denounced the Senate’s tax bill and exposed how the bill targets low income and LGBTQ Americans. This tax bill aims to eliminate the individual mandate, a key component of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which will cause 13 million low income Americans to lose healthcare, and its 1.5 trillion dollar price tag could trigger massive spending cuts to programs like Medicaid, which is the largest federal funder of HIV care and treatment.

“Senate Republicans are continuing their relentless attack on affordable healthcare and critical programs for low income and LGBTQ Americans under the guise of their tax bill,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “Healthcare is a human right and the Senate must reject ramming through this destructive and dangerous bill that clearly targets our nation’s most marginalized communities.”

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: WHAT THE GOP TAX BILL WOULD MEAN FOR LGBTQ AMERICANS

Senate tax bill eliminates the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) without it, millions of people will drop out of the insurance market and drive up health care costs. This will result in 13 million low income individuals losing healthcare coverage in the next 10 years, with 4 million losing health coverage in the first year. Cutting health care will affect people at risk for, or living with HIV and result in lack of access to essential medications.

Deficits caused by the Senate’s 1.5 trillion dollar healthcare bill will result in spending cuts to vital program. According to the AARP, the legislation would result in an automatic $25 billion cut to Medicare.

  • Medicare is the largest federal funder of HIV care and treatment. Massive cuts to the program would put many people with HIV at risk of losing access to life-saving medicines and treatment

Lowest-income Americans will take a large hit under the Senate tax bill.

Both the House and Senate tax bill introduce an expanded child tax credit that excludes low-income families. This benefit will not be accessible for 10 million children whose parent(s) work for low pay.

  • Families living in poverty are disproportionally LGBTQ. Single LGBTQ adults raising children are three times more likely to report household incomes near the poverty line, and married and partnered LGBTQ adults are twice as likely.

The House tax bill, as passed, would repeal the Johnson Amendment, a prevision that some Republicans are attempting into sneak into the Senate and final version of the tax bill. This amendment prevents tax-exempt orgs from endorsing/opposing political candidates and its elimination this would allow wealthy individuals to manipulate charities to fit their political opinions.
