Kathy Griffin, the SF Gay Men’s Chorus and a tour through Trump’s America

Kathy Griffin, the SF Gay Men’s Chorus and a tour through Trump’s America

It’s not often we can fit Kathy Griffin, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus and Trump-voting red states into one headline, but today is our lucky day.

This weekend, the SF Gay Men’s Chorus will honor Griffin at their 11th annual Crescendo Gala for “her achievements in LGBTQ equality and for using her voice as an agent of change in the movement.”

The two-time Emmy and Grammy award-winning comedian will be joined by fellow guests Wilson Cruz, The Fosters’ Hayden Byerly, the Plaintiffs in California’s Prop. 8 case and activists Jeff Zarillo and Paul Katami, RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5 winner Jinkx Monsoon and country music star Chely Wright at the formal event.

Notably, the fundraising efforts of this year’s gala will be put towards the chorus’ Lavender Pen Tour, during which the SFGMC will visit seven cities and numerous small towns in six states including Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. While in each of these states, the group will host performances and begin a dialogue with community leaders in an effort to support local LGBTQ communities.

Here’s some more info on that tour:

Why lavender, you ask?

Well, there’s a good story behind the name:

Harvey Milk, the first openly gay candidate elected to major office in the U.S., has often been referred to as the patron saint of SFGMC. The Chorus’ first public performance was at the candlelight vigil held on the night of Milk’s assassination. It was as if the baton of activism had been passed on.

In 1977, a year before his death, Harvey sponsored a landmark gay civil rights bill. Mayor George Moscone signed that bill into law with a lavender pen given to him by Harvey. The Lavender Pen remains a symbol of the fight for equality for all and the reason for the tour’s name.

The chorus will be joined on the tour by the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, and we’re looking forward to hearing how it all goes down.

Head here for more info on the Crescendo Gala.

And now, please enjoy this parody of Sam Smith‘s hit “Stay With Me” the SFGMC worked on, titled “Please Go Home”:

It’s official! LA Pride parade canceled, replaced with protest march

It’s official! LA Pride parade canceled, replaced with protest march

Following a concerted effort by local LGBTQ activists, Los Angeles Pride will take on a decidedly more political atmosphere this year.

“We’re doing everything we can to make sure that the people who come to the city, sometimes only once or twice a year, are going to see something familiar [at the pride festival].”

That’s Christopher Street West board president Chris Classen, trying to assure folks at a Wednesday night community meeting that this year’s LA Pride in June will still provide a satisfying amount of entertainment, despite the major change in theme.

The annual pride parade has been sidelined altogether to make way for the nationwide LGBT Resist march, scheduled in several U.S. cities for Sunday, June 11th, the day LA Pride usually takes place.

Bound to be much like the vast Women’s March that swept many American cities on January 21st, LA’s Resist march will kick off at Hollywood and Highland and follow a 3.1 mile path to La Brea Avenue, where it will then turn onto Santa Monica Boulevard and end at San Vicente at the entrance of the Pride festival.

Queerty spoke with one of the march’s organizers, activist and L.A. Police and Fire pension commissioner Brian Pendleton, shortly after Trump’s inauguration.

“I was seeing all the excitement around what was going on in Washington D.C. regarding their Gay Pride efforts,” he said. “And coming off of what the Women’s March did around the country, it seemed like a natural fit.”

So far, the march has received over 23K positive responses on Facebook.

WEHOville reports they’re expecting about “500,000 people” to attend to LA march.

The Pride Festival itself will still be a ticketed event (probably $20 each day), and it’s scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, June 10-11 in West Hollywood Park.

There’s also a free trans event and a sober area  on Friday June 9.

The annual Pride parade is expected to return in 2018.

popeVATICAN. Pope Francis open to allowing married priests in Catholic Church: “The pope raised the idea in an interview with the German newspaper Die Zeit. He ruled out the prospect of allowing single men who are already priests to marry, but was open to the idea of allowing unmarried laymen or men already married to be ordained. The pope raised the prospect in the context of allowing “viri probati,” Latin for “tested men,” to be ordained in places with a scarcity of priests.”
