Trump Administration Sought Help from FBI to Squash Reports about its Communications with Russia

The Trump administration contacted the FBI asking it to publicly dispute reports about communications between Trump’s associates and Russia during the 2016 campaign, CNN reports:

White House officials had sought the help of the bureau and other agencies investigating the Russia matter to say that the reports were wrong and that there had been no contacts, the officials said. The reports of the contacts were first published by The New York Times and CNN on February 14.

The direct communications between the White House and the FBI were unusual because of decade-old restrictions on such contacts. Such a request from the White House is a violation of procedures that limit communications with the FBI on pending investigations.

CNN has more

The CNN reports as additional news emerged that Trump’s former campaign chair Paul Manafort was the victim of a blackmail attempt by a Ukrainian parliamentarian named Serhiy Leshchenko.

Politico reports:

The undated communications, which are allegedly from the iPhone of Manafort’s daughter, include a text that appears to come from a Ukrainian parliamentarian named Serhiy Leshchenko, seeking to reach her father, in which he claims to have politically damaging information about both Manafort and Trump.

Attached to the text is a note to Paul Manafort referring to “bulletproof” evidence related to Manafort’s financial arrangement with Ukraine’s former president, the pro-Russian strongman Viktor Yanukovych, as well as an alleged 2012 meeting between Trump and a close Yanukovych associate named Serhiy Tulub.

“Considering all the facts and evidence that are in my possession, and before possible decision whether to pass this to [the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine] or FBI I would like to get your opinion on this and maybe your way to work things out that will persuade me to do otherwise,” reads the note. It is signed “Sergii” — an alternative transliteration of Leshchenko’s given name — and it urges Manafort to respond to an email address that reporters have used to reach Leshchenko.

And House Republicans are reportedly planning to do away with a Democratic resolution “that would have forced disclosure of President Donald Trump’s potential ties with Russia and any possible business conflicts of interest,” Politico adds, in a separate report:

Seeking to avoid a full House vote on the so-called “resolution of inquiry” — a roll call that would be particularly embarrassing and divisive for the right — Republicans will send proposal by Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) to the House Judiciary Committee for a panel vote on Tuesday, two Democratic sources said. The GOP-controlled committee is expected to kill the resolution.

Without committee action, obscure parliamentary procedures would allow Democrats to call the resolution to the floor for a vote by the full House. But rejection by the Judiciary panel all but assures the measure will never see a floor vote.

Documentary 'Kiki' hits theaters and video services tomorrow!

Kiki, a new documentary about LGBTQ youth of color and the kiki and ball scenes, comes out in select Los Angeles theaters and video on demand services tomorrow, Friday, February 24th. It will open in New York City March 1. The film follows those in the ballroom and kiki scenes over the course of four years; showing everything from their involvement in the world of ballroom competitions, to their personal stories of familial relationships and homelessness, to political and HIV and AIDS advocacy. Made as a collaboration between Kiki gatekeeper, Twiggy Pucci Garçon and the Swedish filmmaker Sara Jordenö, Kiki is largely considered to be a modern descendant to the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning.

As well as being released on demand for Sundance Selects on IFC, Kiki will also get a limited theatrical run. For those in the Los Angeles area, this includes special screenings with Q&As following the film. On Friday night, February 24th, there will be a panel moderated by Trace Lysette of Transparent, and on Saturday, February 25th, the panel will be moderated by actor and advocate Wilson Cruz. Both panels will include director Sara Jordenö and the film subjects Chi Chi, Chris, Twiggy, and Zariya. They will take place at the Laemmle Monica Film Center in Santa Monica at 7:10pm. Tickets are available here.

Kiki’s message is more important now than ever. The stories of queer and trans young people of color are still rarely told, much less in such an in-depth way. Hearing these stories of resilience within this community is crucial, and Kiki empowers these young people to share their own voices. We must all stand together to resist the powers working to divide us. Here’s where you can watch Kiki on demand, check out the trailer below.
