A Year On, ‘Mr. Gay Syria’ Feels Under Threat in Istanbul
The winner of a contest held in Istanbul last year meant to empower and highlight gay Syrian refugees has reported his situation as deteriorating.
In an interview last week with German public news service Deutsche Welle, Hussein S.—who asked his surname not be used owing to his cautiousness—said he is feeling the glare of the attention the event brought him, feeling exposed not only in a city where anti-LGBT sentiment is on the rise, but with his own Syrian relatives who have threatened him if he did not “return to the right path.”
The contest was organized by an LGBT Syrian refugee center in Berlin “to create a media buzz,” said organizer Mahmoud Hassino. It certainly did, although the Mr. Gay Syria winner could not obtain a visa to travel to the Mr. Gay World event in Malta. At the time, Hassino felt Istanbul was still relatively accepting of its LGBT population, especially in comparison to places from which refugees such as Hussein had fled, but his opinion has since changed. Developments such as the banning and crackdown against Istanbul’s gay pride parade last year have created a chilling effect. Hussein himself has seen the change on the ground:
Istanbul, too, has become much less tolerant, Hussein said, with small pockets where queer-identified people could freely express themselves quickly disappearing. “There used to be parts of the city where you could openly show that you’re gay, where no one cared who you are.”
“That’s no longer possible,” Hussein said.
While Hussein had registered for the pageant for fun, and won by acting out a scene in which a man visits his mother’s grave, despondent over his family’s plan to marry him off to a female cousin, he started to receive harassing telephone calls shortly afterwards. He had come to Turkey and Istanbul in order to live more openly, but it seems that his past is even more difficult to escape than he knew.
Now, however, if Hussein and his Syrian boyfriend, with whom he shares a flat, don’t manage to leave Istanbul soon, he might one day regret the attention that the Mr. Gay Syria pageant has brought him. He registered for a UN resettlement program two years ago – and is still waiting.
Hussein said he was desperate to leave Turkey as soon as possible: “I don’t know, I might disappear.”
From Berlin, Hassino says he has tried to do what he can in order to help the five contestants who took part. One has managed to reach Norway to join a boyfriend, another is in Greece, another has gone north under uncertain circumstances, while another, like Hussein, remains in Istanbul. He has tried to pressure the German government to intervene, as well. The best of intentions have run into the still-grim reality, but the vision behind them still maintains:
For his part, on Valentine’s Day and a year after being crowned Mr. Gay Syria, Hussein said he had not given up hope: “I dream of living in a country where I can walk down the street and hold my boyfriend’s hand.”

Over 1,000 Parents of Trans Youth Call on President Trump to Preserve Guidance About Trans Students
Today, as reports surface that the Trump Administration plans to revoke guidance protecting transgender students nationwide, more than 1,000 parents of transgender children have now signed onto a letter to President Trump calling on him to preserve these vital protections and fully enforce federal civil rights laws. The letter, signed by parents from 45 states and Washington, D.C., was organized by HRC and its newly formed Parents for Transgender Equality Council, a coalition of the nation’s leading parent-advocates working for equality and fairness for transgender people.
“It’s disgraceful that just a week after undermining lifesaving protections for transgender students, reports are surfacing that President Donald Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and Secretary DeVos are aiming to fully rescind guidance that provides support and security to tens of thousands of transgender young people and their families across the country,” said Mary Beth Maxwell, HRC’s Senior Vice President. “HRC is proud to stand with more than a thousand parents of transgender youth who have come together to implore Donald Trump to defend the rights, safety and dignity of their children. If President Trump moves forward with this attack on transgender students, there are millions of people, including these parents and others like them, who will stand up and fight for basic fairness for every child.”
The parents’ letter was initially sent to the Trump Administration with 800 signatures after news broke that the Department of Justice would no longer challenge a nationwide hold on the Obama-era transgender student guidance. The parents, representing the thousands of families of transgender children across the country, write, “No young person should wake up in the morning fearful of the school day ahead. When this guidance was issued last year, it provided our families — and other families like our own across the country — with the knowledge and security that our government was determined to protect our children from bullying and discrimination. Please do not take that away from us.”
In 2016, the Obama Administration’s Departments of Justice and Education issued comprehensive guidance to ensure that transgender students were being treated fairly and with dignity in public and federally-funded schools, including having equal access to sex-segregated facilities, such as restrooms and locker rooms, that are consistent with their gender identity. Thirteen anti-equality state attorneys general, led by the notoriously anti-LGBTQ Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, filed suit challenging the guidance. After a Texas federal judge issued a nationwide hold on enforcement of the guidance, the Obama Administration responded by requesting the court limit the hold to the 13 states filing suit.
A little more than a week ago, just 48 hours after Jeff Sessions was confirmed as Attorney General and a day after being sworn in, the Department of Justice moved to eliminate the Obama Administration’s challenge to a nationwide injunction against enforcement of the guidance, allowing the nationwide hold to continue. Despite this action, transgender students facing discrimination can still file suit under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.
Transgender youth face significant discrimination and bullying throughout our nation’s schools. Last year, North Carolina adopted the infamous HB2, legislation requiring discrimination against transgender people, including in public schools. Several states, including Texas, are currently considering similar bills. Seventy-five percent of transgender students report feeling unsafe in school according to a report by GLSEN. And, tragically, more than 50 percent of transgender youth report attempting suicide at least once in their lifetime.

Writing for alt-right conspiracy website BarbWire last week, anti-gay activist Scott Lively said that a homosexual cabal is plotting to take down current U.S. President Donald Trump.
In 2014, Lively was profiled in the Human Rights Campaign’s “The Export of Hate” report. He has been accused of crimes against humanity for inciting anti-gay hatred in Uganda and aiding in the passing of their “Kill the Gays” bill.
In his unhinged piece titled The Obama/Soros/Media Shadow Government and the Illusion of Chaos, Lively argued that “‘gays’ and homosexualists” in the media are responsible for “the ongoing treasonous sabotage of the Trump administration.”
Trump, he continued, must not “leave the ‘gays’ in the swamp” but should “take the bold and courageous step of revoking Executive Order 12968 and restoring the ban on ‘gays’ in the intelligence agencies as it existed until 1990.”

Satan is not creative. His strategies and tactics are tediously predictable, once you recognize them. Of course, it’s not easy to stand firm when it seems like you’re about to be engulfed by a mountainous rushing wall of fire, but if you do stand firm the illusion vaporizes on contact and you realize it was a lie. Once you’ve stood up to that wall a few times it loses most of its effect on you.
No group is better at this satanic strategy than the “gay” political movement, which was an unstated reason why open homosexuals were never allowed into the intelligence agencies in the history of the nation, a policy upheld by the none other than the 9th Circuit US Appeals Court in the 1990 case, “High Tech Gays v. Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office.” (Indicating just how dangerous to our nation the idea of homosexual spooks was even to the farthest left-wing judges in the country: J. Edgar Hoover was by no means an anomaly.) But then along came Bill Clinton who issued Executive Order 12968 on August 2, 1995, opening the intelligence agencies and top secret security clearance to the Machiavellian “gay” network.
That policy continued under W. Bush, and when Obama came into office the floodgates really flew open. My guess based solely on my knowledge of the “gay” movement and Obama’s personal priorities, is that the today’s alphabet soup of intelligence agencies could easily be condensed to just four letters: LGBT, since that’s almost certainly who’s driving the agenda evidenced in the ongoing treasonous sabotage of the Trump administration.
More critical to the process of creating the false reality by which the far left has steered American public policy for decades is the mainstream media. Again, an industry so heavily dominated by “gays” and homosexualists that there is no longer even a pretense of balance on stories related to LGBT issues. Pro-family views are openly equated with racism and denied inclusion in news reporting. That same subjectivity and arrogance drives their narrative on their entire slate of issues.
My greatest concern about the Trump administration is that secular-minded advisors will allow self-defeating politically-correct assumptions to convince them to leave the “gays” in the swamp, assuming that will win them points with the ultra-powerful LGBT lobby and the larger progressive community it dominates, as well as crossover libertarian and secularist constituencies.
My prayer is that President Trump will awaken to the correlation of anti-Trump radicalism on the left with the “gay” movement and realize that on virtually any issue one can name the most aggressive liars and agitators are homosexuals and their closest surrogates, and that these people absolutely, positively cannot be placated (just ask the Boy Scouts of America). In other words, there is a spiritual dimension to the culture war in which the key common denominator is LGBT affiliation.
I call on Mr. Trump to adopt my earlier recommendation to establish a “Separation of LGBT and State” as outlined here.
I further urge him to take the bold and courageous step of revoking Executive Order 12968 and restoring the ban on “gays” in the intelligence agencies as it existed until 1990.
