Susan Sarandon: ‘My Sexual Orientation is Up for Grabs’

Susan Sarandon: ‘My Sexual Orientation is Up for Grabs’

Susan Sarandon

Susan Sarandon, who is not so popular these days with many Democrats over her support for Jill Stein (more than a few are boycotting her new series FEUD: Bette and Joan) told PrideSource, in an interview that’s mostly about the new series, that she’s sexually fluid, so to speak:

“I’m a serial monogamist, so I haven’t really had a large dating career. I married Chris Sarandon when I was 20, and that went on for quite a while – each of my relationships have. I haven’t exactly been in the midst of a lot of offers of any kind. I’m still not! I don’t know what’s going on! (Laughs) But I think back in the ’60s it just was much more open…Yeah, I’m open. My sexual orientation is up for grabs, I guess you could say.”

Sarandon also talks about her choice for president, and says that people need to stop pointing fingers, look to the future, and stop harping on “woulda, shoulda, coulda.”

RELATED: Bill Maher Asks Susan Sarandon to Explain Her ‘Bernie or Bust’ Mentality: ‘What if Chicken’s Not on the Menu?’

Says Sarandon, in part:

This is the thing: To have the conversations about “woulda, shoulda, coulda” opens up everything about the primaries and all kinds of things. The important thing right now is that we stop harping on blame because blame, if you really want me to talk about this election – you know, I was not the person who brought Trump into power. The DNC has a lot of… there are already suits all over the country about how that was rigged, the primary.

So, to talk about this, for me, is a waste of energy. I think right now we’re about to appoint Scott Pruitt, which is the end of the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency), and we’ve got this gal, (Betsy) DeVos. People have to get over what happened, take some personal responsibility for being in a bubble and not paying attention to what was going on in the country, and start applying their anger and their energy to rectifying what’s going on…

…Now that everybody is awake, we have to take that and that fear, and we have to not indulge our depression – not indulge on pointing fingers – and get out there and work with some of the people who are going to be betrayed by Trump who voted for him and use that as a force for real change, because now it can happen. And we’re in a moment in history where you’re gonna either be on one side or the other, and to be quiet or to be depressed or to blame me is not productive, so that’s what I would say about that.

St. Louis Catholic HS Denies Gay-Straight Alliance Was Banned For Not Supporting Conversion Therapy

St. Louis Catholic HS Denies Gay-Straight Alliance Was Banned For Not Supporting Conversion Therapy

Nerinx Hall St Louis Missouri

Nerinx Hall St LouisA Catholic high school in St Louis, Missouri has denied it banned a LGBT gay-straight alliance club for excluding conversion therapy from its action plan.

Students at the all-girls Nerinx Hall Catholic High School had asked school leadership to start a gay-straight alliance club. They did not receive permission to do so.

When a former student heard about this, she questioned school President John Gabriel who replied that the archdiocese had requested that no Catholic school allow such a club unless it followed “a carefully charted course of action that includes conversion therapy.” However, Gabriel later claimed that he used the term “conversion therapy” in error.

— Kristen Taketa (@Kristen_Taketa) February 15, 2017

When asked for comment, Gabriel provided a list of Nerinx Hall’s initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion such as training for teachers on ministry to LGBT individuals and diversity forums for students.

The St Louis Post-Dispatch reports that in February 2016, the archdiocese published a document called “Hope and Holiness” outlining guidance for ministry to LGBT people.

The document states that Catholic schools should not establish LGBT support clubs without consulting the archdiocese. It also says that although LGBT support groups can provide emotional support to individuals, there is also a “danger” in such groups’ encouraging the labeling of sexuality and gender identity. “Adolescents.” it notes “are apt to suffer in a particular way from labeling themselves as gay.”

LGBTQ students and faculty, the alumni stand with you. We will not let you fight this alone. @NerinxHall

— Becca Eisenreich (@beisenreich2011) February 15, 2017

Archdiocese spokesman Gabe Jones said:

“Being the archdiocese, the archbishop has pastoral responsibility for every Catholic in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. And so that applies to everyone who goes to a Catholic church, any parishioner, and these students who attend Catholic schools.

“When it comes to Catholic teaching, the archdiocese is the arbiter of what is Catholic and what is not.”

Former students say this isn’t the first time efforts have been made to form a LGBT club at Nerinx Hall.

2001 graduate Beth Schumacher said Gabriel’s letter portrayed a different school than the one she attended 16 years ago. She remembered Nerinx Hall as a progressive and “extremely open-minded” school.

“There are a lot of alumnae out there who are really, really disappointed both with the decision and with the direction it might be going in right now,” Schumacher said. “There are young people at risk. If someone is asking for a club of that nature, then there are definitely individuals who can use that level of support.”

Nerinx Hall states that it has three main goals: that every student “know herself and her world,” receive a “loving community of faith” and “deliberate Christian action.”

Mother-Son Duo Joins HRC’s #LoveYourNeighbor Campaign

Mother-Son Duo Joins HRC’s #LoveYourNeighbor Campaign

“The only thing that should come between me and my neighbor is our walls of our house and our fences,” Josh said. “The second I step out of my door I want to be able to say, ‘Hey, how are you?’ and I’d hope that they’d do the same for me.”

Along with his mother Meredith, Josh has joined HRC’s #LoveYourNeighbor campaign, a video storytelling series focused on sharing the stories of LGBTQ and allied people in Tupelo, Mississippi. In the video, the pair shares Josh’s coming out story with the hopes of creating a climate in their hometown that facilitates love and acceptance.

Meredith knew when Josh opened up to her at the age of 12 that an incredible weight was lifted off his shoulders — and she wanted him to remember that moment forever.

“It was about me being open and honest, and sharing some of the pain that I’ve been dealing with and kind of covering up,” Josh said. “(She) knew that it was something important and something that I should remember and celebrate, so she actually surprised me with a necklace with the date and time — the exact time — that I came out to her.”

Sharing personal stories is a powerful tool to change hearts and minds, and helps create new advocates for equality. Josh encourages his neighbors to be open and communicate with one another in order to gain a greater understanding of the diverse backgrounds that make up the Tupelo community.

“I think conversation is necessary to create change,” said Josh. “There’s something in everyone that’s different. If we all just acknowledged that say, ‘Hey I’m different, you’re different, let’s be different together. Let’s love this town that we have. Let’s love this community, this earth, and not look for things to divide us.’”

On Tuesday, March 7, the #LoveYourNeighbor campaign will culminate with a town hall discussion in Tupelo featuring all seven videos of the participants. You can learn more about the town hall here.

In 2014, HRC launched Project One America, a comprehensive multi-year effort to dramatically expand LGBTQ equality in the South through permanent campaigns in Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas.

Are gay supremacists ‘literally’ Nazi stormtroopers? This guy thinks so.

Are gay supremacists ‘literally’ Nazi stormtroopers? This guy thinks so.

What is a “literal” Nazi stormstrooper, you ask? It is an “active homosexual” person. At least, according to good ol’ Bryan Fischer.

“Homosexual supremacy is the doctrine that homosexual rights trump every other right in the world,” Fischer said on his American Family Radio show this week. “They trump every right that heterosexuals have, they trump every right that citizens have not to be pushed around by the activists and the LGBT agenda.”

He then brought up “over-rated” “Hillary flunky” Meryl Strep who he still holds a grudge against for comments she made about Donald Trump last month.

Related: Donald Trump lashes out at “Hillary flunky” Meryl Streep following historic speech

“You know, Meryl Streep is out there saying she is going to stand up to the Brownshirts in our culture, referring to Donald Trump,” Fischer said. “The real Brownshirts are in the homosexual movement! In fact, the Brownshirts under Hitler literally were homosexuals. You couldn’t become an officer in the original Brownshirts, Hitler’s Brownshirts, without being an active homosexual!”

Oh, but he didn’t stop there.

“The gay Gestapo have the same kind of tactics, the same kind of worldview, the same kind of mentality [as Nazis],” Bryan continued, before accusing gay people of “[running] over anyone who gets in their way to punish them.”

Watch the bizarro rant below. Or don’t.

HRC Mourns JoJo Striker, Trans Woman Murdered in Ohio

HRC Mourns JoJo Striker, Trans Woman Murdered in Ohio

Post submitted with contributions from Kaitlyn Schmaltz, HRC Public Education Intern

HRC was deeply shocked and horrified to learn that JoJo Striker, a transgender woman, was found killed in Toledo, Ohio, on February 8. Striker, 23, was found shot dead in an empty parking garage. Police do not yet have a suspect or a motive for her murder, but the case is under investigation.

Striker’s mother, Shanda Striker, described her as “funny and entertaining” and said her family loved her deeply. “I just have a plea to the community: if you know something, anything, please stand up,” she told WTOL 11.

Initial media reports identified Striker by the wrong gender, Mic reported. This underscores the systematic undercounting of transgender murder victims. There is no mandatory national system tracking whether homicide victims are transgender, so advocates rely on media reports to count how many transgender people are killed each year. In some cases, law enforcement, local media, or family and friends misidentify a victim’s gender—as they did with Striker. In others, they may report the victim’s gender correctly but not disclose the fact that they were transgender.

Striker’s death reflects a pattern of violence against the transgender community, particularly women of color. Striker’s is the third murder of a transgender woman of color HRC has identified in 2017. Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow and Mesha Caldwell were killed in January. Of the 22 murders of transgender people HRC tracked in 2016, more than three in four victims were Black, and 86 percent were women. In their 2016 report on anti-transgender violence, A Matter of Life and Death, HRC and the Trans People of Color Coalition explained that racism, sexism and anti-transgender stigma together “exponentially” increase the likelihood that transgender women of color will experience violence.

Striker is the seventh transgender woman reported killed in Ohio since 2013, the majority of them women of color. In 2016, two other black transgender women—Brandi Bledsoe and Rae’Lynn Thomas—were murdered in the state. Thomas was allegedly killed in a bias-motivated attack by her mother’s ex-boyfriend, while Bledsoe’s death remains unsolved. Ohio’s hate crime law does not cover crimes motivated by gender identity or sexual orientation.

Transgender murder victims from Ohio account for about nine percent of the cases HRC has tracked; nationally, about three percent of all reported murders take place in Ohio. The rate cannot be explained by a larger-than-average transgender population: a 2016 Williams Institute report ranked Ohio 34th of the 50 states for the estimated percentage of residents who are transgender.

HRC expresses its sincere sorrow and condolences to Ms. Striker’s family.
