Over 400 of NYC’s brightest nightlife stars checked into BPM at the Out Hotel for the 16th Annual GLAM Awards. Local drag queen Cherry Jubliee  presented the event, hosted by RuPaul‘s Drag Race Season 6 winner Bianca Del Rio and after dark icon Michael Musto. Alexis Michelle, Cazwell, Bob The Drag Queen, Cazwell, Chelsea Piers, Mila Jam, and Pusse Couture were standouts among the talented performers riling up the crowd with beats by DJ David Serrano. Drag icon Sweetie (To Wong Fu) was presented with the “Living Legend Award” in an evening filled with laughter, tears and applause. Additional winners included Queerty contributor Chris Harder (Best Burlesque), Justin Luke (Best Party Promoter), Scotty Rox (Best DJ), Jeff Eason (Best Nightlife Photographer), Sutton Lee Seymour (Breakthrough Artist), Paige Turner (Best Video). There were many surprises during the night, including Bianca Del Rio who presented the “Best Comedy Award” to Bob the Drag Queen, dressed as Dorothy from the opening Wizard of Oz skit, after announcing he hadn’t been in NYC all year, but that Bob really deserved it. Later in the evening, VH1’s Mob Wives star Natalie Guercio and her boyfriend London Rene joined Chrissy Monroe and Briah Bettencourt to present Bianca, Cherry and Michael with a custom-made cake by Isabella’s Creations. Most of the crowd moved downtown to WestGay at West Way for Frankie Sharp’s weekly throwback party that brought home the coveted “Best Club Night” Award that evening. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees!

Shepard Smith Points Out States That Fought Integration Are Now Against Gay Marriage: VIDEO

Shepard Smith Points Out States That Fought Integration Are Now Against Gay Marriage: VIDEO

Shepard Smith Gay Marriage Supreme Court

Another one for the “Well OBVIOUSLY” files: Fox’s Shepard Smith addressed the Supreme Court’s decision to review the Sixth Circuit gay marriage cases Friday and, while speaking with Wall Street Journal editor John Bussey, pointed out a very uncomfortable truth:

Not in every case, but in most cases, the same states which were fighting integration are fighting this as well. Those states which always seem to be behind the curve for reasons which are explainable and understandable.

Bussey tries to undermine Shepard’s statement by stating that there’s “still disagreement on this issue within the American population,” to which Shepard flawlessly ripostes, “There’s still disagreement on segregation.”

You can watch the back and forth AFTER THE JUMP…

Detroit Minister Sues Michigan For The Right To Conduct Same-Sex and Polygamous Marriages

Detroit Minister Sues Michigan For The Right To Conduct Same-Sex and Polygamous Marriages

Screen Shot 2015-01-16 at 2.36.41 PMA bold Detroit minister filed a lawsuit against the state of Michigan, alleging state law violates his right to religious freedom by barring him from conducting same-sex and polygamous marriages reports The Detroit NewsRev. Neil Patrick Carrick filed the lawsuit on Monday against Gov. Rick Snyder and Attorney General Bill Schuette, citing that the state’s ban on such unions runs counter to the First Amendment and 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Carrick issued a stoic statement on the matter Tuesday.

Said Carrick:

“Churches should have the right to marry who they want to marry. I’ve been told by others that ‘we would love to marry (gays and lesbians) but we can’t because we would be breaking the law.’

“The state of Michigan does not have the right to tell us what to do in our church.”

In the lawsuit, Carrick claims the state engages in “the disparate treatment” of gays, lesbians and what he calls “plural relationships.” Carrick, a former pastor with the United Church of Christ, says he turned down requests from same-sex to marry because he would be breaking state law. Michigan law states that someone who knowingly performs a marriage ceremony for same-sex couples is a punishable crime and carries a fine of up to $500. “Michigan officials create discrimination and potentially prosecution of private conduct between consenting adults without requiring law enforcement officials to show harm to society or those involved,” Carrick said.

Gina Calcagno, the campaign manager for Michigan for Marriage, an advocacy group that wholeheartedly supports same-sex marriage, said many religious are eager to perform ceremonies for same-sex couples. “They are just waiting for the state to catch up,” said Calcagno. The United Church of Christ filed a lawsuit last April against the state of North Carolina arguing that the state’s marriage law violates the First Amendment rights of clergy to “free exercise of religion.” A federal judge struck down the North Carolina law in October.

A spokesman for the Michigan Attorney General’s Office declined to comment about the lawsuit Tuesday. Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court announced it would review a case challenging Michigan’s gay marriage ban.

'Glee' Character Comes Out As A Trans Man In Latest Episode

'Glee' Character Comes Out As A Trans Man In Latest Episode
Warning: “Glee” spoilers!

“Glee” started its final season off with the much-anticipated “Frozen” cover, but its latest big storyline was even more powerful. During Friday’s episode, “Jagged Little Tapestry,” Coach Shannon Beiste, played by three-time Emmy nominee Dot Marie Jones, came out as a transgender man. In the episode, Beiste informs Sam and Sue (played respectively by Chord Overstreet and Jane Lynch) that he is taking time off to begin a medical transition.

On why this was the right time for the story arc, Jones told The Hollywood Reporter, “Like it or not, it’s real life. I think Fox is amazing for putting this on broadcast television.”

The “Glee” storyline comes at a time of slowly increasing representation of trans men and women in television. At last Sunday’s 2015 Golden Globes, “Transparent” actor Jeffrey Tambor, who plays a transgender woman on the show, won the award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, which he dedicated to the transgender community. “Transparent” series creator Jill Soloway dedicated the show’s win for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy to Leelah Alcorn, a trans teen who committed suicide in December.

Jones says that her character’s physical transformation is a “big transition” and will be seen around episode six. On why “Glee” is right to tell this story, the actress added, “We know it will make a difference.”
