Clearing your Internet browser's cookies can help by deleting the information that websites have gathered about you and stored on your computer as small text files. Most of these files are completely harmless, but others store where you went, what you did, and any personal information you gave. Web sites may also allow other websites (their advertisers, for example) to put cookies, known as third-party cookies, on your computer. This is a simple guide to clear your browser's cookies to ensure that companies are not keeping tabs on what you do online.

Steps

  1. Open your browser. Since each browser is set up differently, we will look at the process for each of the major browsers: Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 1.5, Opera, and Konqueror.

Internet Explorer 6

  1. Once your browser is open, select the Tools menu and click Internet Options and select the General tab.
  2. To delete all cookies, in the Temporary Internet Files section, click Delete Cookies and press OK.
  3. If you wish to delete only specific cookies and keep others, instead of Step 2:
    1. Click the Settings button, then click View Files.
    2. Scroll through the list and select the cookies you want to delete.
    3. Multiple cookies can be selected by holding down the CTRL key while clicking.
    4. Press the Delete key.
    5. Press OK on any dialog boxes that appear.

Internet Explorer 7

  1. Once your browser is open, select the Tools menu and click Internet Options and select the General tab.
  2. To delete all cookies, in the Browsing History section, click Delete....
  3. Then click Delete cookies....
  4. Click Yes.
  5. If you wish to delete only specific cookies and keep others, instead of Step 2:
    1. Click the Settings button, then click View Files.
    2. Scroll through the list and select the cookies you want to delete.

Firefox 1.5

  1. Once your browser is open, select the Tools menu and click Options (may also be under Edit -> Preferences depending on your version) and select the Privacy button.
  2. Select the Cookies tab.
  3. To delete all cookies click the Delete All Cookies button.
  4. To delete specific cookies, click View Cookies and look through the list of the sites you wish to delete the cookies for, and press Remove Cookies. You can even expand each site to delete specific cookies from each site.

Firefox 3.0.10

  1. Once your browser is open, select the Tools menu and click Options... and select the Privacy tab.
  2. Click the Show Cookies... button.
  3. To delete all cookies click the Remove All Cookies button.
  4. To delete specific cookies, click View Cookies and look through the list of the sites you wish to delete the cookies for, and press Remove Cookies. You can even expand each site to delete specific cookies from each site.

Opera

  1. Once your browser is open, select the Tools menu and click Delete Private Data and click the Details button.
  2. If you wish to keep things such as history, saved passwords, cache, etc., uncheck those items and click Delete. You may get a dialog that says "Active transfer has not been removed." if you are currently downloading a file.
  3. If you want to only delete certain cookies, click Tools and hover Advanced and click Cookies. From this screen, you can search for and select cookies to be deleted. To do so, select the select the site or the individual cookie and click Delete.

Konqueror

  1. Once your browser is open, selec the Settings menu and click Configure Konqueror.
  2. Scroll down and select Cookies.
  3. Click the Management tab.
  4. Select the cookies you wish to delete and click Delete, or click Delete All to delete all cookies.

Tips

  • It is a good idea to clear your browser's cookies on a regular basis.
  • You can disable or restrict cookies through the sections above. This is recommended for security reasons, but will render some sites inoperable. It is possible to only allow cookies for sites that you specify.

This is called the browser's cache. Clearing it occasionally or regularly can protect your privacy and free up some space in your computer. Since every browser is different, the following sections will outline the steps involved in clearing the cache for several popular web browsers.

  1. Once your browser is open, press ALT on keyboard,click the Tools menu.
  2. Click on Delete Browsing History...
  3. Select "Temporary Internet Files".
  4. Click on "Delete".
  5. Once the files have been deleted, you can dismiss the "Internet Options" dialogue by clicking the "Okay" button.
Internet Explorer 7
  1. Once your browser is open, press ALT on keyboard (If your Menu Bar is not already visble), click the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
  2. Make sure the General tab is selected.
  3. Under "Browsing History" click "Delete"
  4. In the new window, click Delete Files in the Temporary Internet Files section. If you want, you can also opt to delete cookies and browsing history.
  5. Alternatively, clear your cache for just the current page you're visiting. Press and hold [Ctrl] on your keyboard, then Press [F5] or click on the Refresh button (square button on the toolbar with opposite-facing arrows).

  1. Once your browser is open, click the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
  2. Make sure the General tab is selected.
  3. Click Delete Files in the Temporary Internet Files section and click OK.
  4. If you want the browser to automatically clear the cache whenever you close it, click the Advanced tab. Click to check the box next to the "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" option (in the section labeled "Security"). Click OK. This will delete everything except cookies.

Firefox

Firefox 3.5
  1. After the browser opens, click on "Tools".
  2. Now click on Clear Recent History. Alternatively, you can access this menu directly by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Delete.
  3. Now, beside "Time range to clear", click "Everything".
  4. Click on Details and select only Cache.
  5. Select Clear Now.
Firefox 1.5 / 2.0 / 3.0 Below is the full method, although it is possible to simply go to Tools, and select Clear Private Data, or to just press Ctrl+Shift+Delete. Please note that these options clear what you have set the browser to clear in Tools > Options... > Privacy, which can mean the cache, although it may also include passwords, and search and browsing history, so be careful.

Tips

  • It is a good practice to clear your cache and delete your cookies regularly.
  • You can also use a third-party software, like CCleaner.
  • You can also disable the cache entirely in the Options screen. The cache speeds up access to sites by loading data from the cache rather than downloading it, but on broadband connections, you really won't see a benefit.
  • If it's just privacy you're concerned with, you can use Portable Firefox, which will keep your cache, cookies, and more, as well as your own bookmarks, settings, passwords, and authenticated login sessions on a USB flash drive or portable hard drive.
